Title: Andrews Houses
Post by: Tickettyboo on Sunday 04 January 15 12:05 GMT (UK)
I have a birth registered in 1885, Chester le Street District.

The census return for 1891 has 3 children in this family who are listed as being born in "Andrews Houses" . In 1901 two of these children are down as being born in Marley Hill and the third in Gateshead.

I assume that Andrews Houses was some sort of housing for a pit or factory (but could be wrong). Does anyone know where it was?

Thanks

Boo

Thanks JenB :-)

I did see the pit when I looked earlier, but would have thought that area would come into Gateshead Registration District. I'll see if I can check that out.

Andrews Houses were in Lamesley Parish, which was in Chester le Street RD http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/chester-le-street.html

Don't confuse Andrews Houses with Andrews House which is clearly marked on old maps. Andrews Houses are not.

Andrews House was a 15th/16th century farmhouse/manor house, the ruins of which are still clearly visible. I recollect reading an article some years ago in  the N&D FHS monthly magazine explaining that originally Andrews Houses did not have a fresh water supply and the inhabitants used to collect their water from Andrews House.

Andrews Houses were erected some time after Andrews House Colliery was opened in 1843. As far as I am aware (and I have searched for them), there is no sign of them left on the ground. I believed they were more or less where the Causey Arch Steam Railway station and engine sheds are now situated.

The only photograph I have seen of Andrews Houses is in a local history book of photographs published by the Sunniside Local History Society. You might find the photograph reproduced on their website.

Thank you

I think I actually have a copy of that Sunniside book, I'll dig it out and have a look (as soon as I remember where it went after the last move)

Since I replied to your post I have checked the Sunniside FHS website.

They show a lot of history on Andrews Houses together with quite a few old photographs.

Sorry.

I forgot to mention:

Andrews Houses were in Tanfield Parish until 1868 when they became part of the newly created Marley Hill Parish.

Hi, my Uncle and his family lived There. Can't remember what year they were knocked down, possible 70-80s. They moved to Sunnyside. What names are you looking for.

Thanks mickbash.
The family name was Myers, but I think they moved from there quite soon and were in Gateshead for the other census years.

I just got nosey about Andrews Houses and wondered where and what it was.

long time since original post I know. The National Library of Scotland website is wonderful for old mapping so try https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15.7&lat=54.90951&lon=-1.67945&layers=6&b=11
for location of the old Andrewshouse Colliery in County Durham. Change the map in the "choose an historic map overlay" box bottom left. The 25" 1892-1914 give a clear row of terrace house to the north-east of the colliery, I'm assuming that those are the associated housing. I had Pattison and Craig relatives living there in the 1860s 1870s plus other relatives in the nearby Marley Hill colliery housing.
