Hi,
I am looking for any information on this person - Ellen Nixon, born in Sunderland during the March quarter of 1870.
She can be found with her mother, Ellen, in 1871 living in Stranton, Hartlepool.
Her mother, Ellen Nixon, had been born around 1852 in Sunderland, gave her marital status as 'married' and a 'mariner's wife.'
I can then find no trace of the pair again.
Ellen (1870), married Stephen Hern in Sunderland in 1888 - but of her mother and father there is no sign.
Can anybody find a marriage or Ellen (snr) after 1871?
Thank you
Sue

I wonder if her mother really was married? She was only 19 in 1871 so can't have been married long.
Have you got the marriage certificate for daughter Ellen? That would give more information re father/witnesses etc
-
Not seeing much for them in the 1881 census as Milliepede said you should maybe get her marriage certificate to see what information is on it
-
Hi,
Thanks for all your efforts - I will buy Ellen's marriage certificate and see if that helps!

Or you could get her birth certificate, to see what information is offered there.
But she could lie about her Father's name on the marriage certificate (depending on what she has been told) and her Mother could lie on the birth certificate.
Have you looked for any possible marriages of Ellen to Nixon in the area and timeframe?
Or they could be completely 'respectable'.

Hi All,
because I was slightly unsure of Ellen's birth date (I think her birth was registered in Sunderland during the March quarter of 1870), I bought a copy of her marriage certificate to Stephen Hern to see who her father was named as.
He was Joseph Nixon (deceased by 1888) and a ship's riveter by trade.
I then looked and found a marriage between a Joseph Nixon and an Eleanor Stewart in Sunderland during the December quarter of 1869 - which I am presuming is correct.
Eleanor (Ellen) seems to have been born around 1852, but still can't find any trace of her, Joseph, or Ellen in 1881 - can anybody help!
Thanks
Sue

May also be worth looking to see if mother Ellen married after you found them in 1871. They could be in the household of a new husband in 1871 with your Ellen 1870 recorded with his surname.

Hi
I definitely think I have found something that may indicate that! Ellen gave her address as 8 Hope Street on her marriage certificate.
She and Stephen were still living in Hope Street in 1891 and, within the same dwelling there was a:
James Healey born in Ireland c1831
With him was his wife, Eleanor, born c1851 in Sunderland, and children, Sarah, aged 16 years, Elizabeth 13 years, Margaret, 11 years, Mary, 7 years, Teresa, 4 years, and Stephen, aged around 6 months, all born in Sunderland.
I am wondering whether Eleanor is Ellen's mother, James was a coachman and can be found in 1881 living in 18 Back Hopper Street, Sunderland.
He is widowed, a coachman, and has 4 children with him; Samuel, aged 24 years, Mary, 16 years, Catherine, 12 years and Margaret 9 years - all the children had been born in Newcastle.
Going back a further 10 years, I have found him in Newcastle, with his wife, Margaret and the above children (Margaret's age is given as 1 month). He is employed as a coachman, so it would appear this is the right man.
Going forward to 1901, the family can be found under the misspelling of 'Naley' still residing in Hope Street. James was still a coach builder and an additional child, James, who is 8 years of age, as been born to him and Eleanor (Elinor).
I can't find either James or Eleanor in 1911 - any help would be appreciated!
Can anybody find a marriage between James and Eleanor? Or information about any of their children?
Thanks!
Sue

Found them in 1911 - living in 6 Hope Street.
James and Ellen indicate that they have been married for 27 years. Around 1884?

In 1891 you have James and Eleanor with children born before a proposed 1884 marriage, i.e.
'Sarah, aged 16 years, Elizabeth 13 years, Margaret, 11 years, ' so Sarah born 1875, Elizabeth 1878 and Margaret 1880. So were these children all born as Nixon?
Any sign in 1881 census with Ellen and her Mother Eleanor?
Have you located a possible death for Joseph Nixon?

There is a tree on ancestry with some marriage and birth certificates for their daughter Sarah Nixon b 1876 Sunderland ...They also have her married to James Healey a few other private trees also ....Have searched and searched for them in the 1881 census ??? ???

Hi here are some dates that may be helpful:- Nixon children whose mothers maiden name was Stewart born in Sunderland, Ellen b-11/1/1870, Sarah 17/3/1876, Elizabeth 16/2/1879, Mary 21/9/1883 then father Joseph Nixon died 14/1/1885. Although i found a Stephen Healy b-5/6/1889 mothers maiden name Steward I could not find a birth for Teresa or a marriage between James Healy and Ellen Nixon (or Ellen Stewart)
-
Hi
That is great! Can I ask where you found those dates?
Ellen (1870) is the child I am researching.
I have seen the tree on ancestry that has a great deal of information regarding Ellen's sister, Sarah. I have also found that everyone researching this family have omitted Ellen, probably because the entire family cannot be traced in 1881 and by 1891, Ellen had married Stephen Hern.
She is a witness at sister Sarah's marriage, and signs 'Ellen Hern'
She can be found with her mother Ellen (nee Stewart) in 1871, where the pair are both living in Hartlepool - Joseph Nixon is at sea.
I have Teresa's birth which was the 19th September 1886, but no marriage for her parents, James Healey and Ellen Nixon (nee Stewart).
I wonder if they ever did?

Hi
Following on from my earlier post I now have the marriage certificate of Ellen Nixon's parents, who are proving to be just as frustrating!
Can anybody find them prior to their marriage:
The certificate reveals:
Joseph Nixon aged 30 years (widower) of Silver Street Sunderland, a boiler builder - father named as Joseph Nixon a boiler builder married Eleanor Stewart, aged 19 years of George Street, father named as James Stewart - a labourer.
The marriage took place on the 6th December 1869 in Sunderland Parish Church - witnesses were James C Hugill (a pawnbroker) and Elizabeth Bremmer (Remmer)? who signed using her mark.
Can anybody find Joseph and Eleanor prior to this date?
Thanks

The plot thickens!
When Ellen Nixon (nee Stewart) became involved with James Healey c 1885 her name was given as Elllen Tute Healey at the baptism of her son, Stephen on the 20th June 1889.
I have found the birth registration of an Eleanor Tute, born in Sunderland during the June quarter of 1850, and she can be found on the 1851 census as Elenor Suitt (Tuitt) with her parents, James (a labourer) and mother Isabella.
James was born c 1806 in Ireland, but Isabella was born in Sunderland around 1814.
Can anybody spot her in 1861 or her family in 1841?
Thanks
Sue

Vague possibility (has Isabella died & James re-married :-\ :-\ )
RG 9 / 3784 / 1/ 10
North Terrace, Dawdon
James Tuit, head, m, 63, Labourer, Ireland
Margaret do, wife, m, 39, do
Sarah do, daur, unm, 17, England (N.K.)
Eleanor do, do, 10, do (N.K.)
-
It could be them!
The 1841 census lists James' wife as being an 'Elizabeth' Tute even though in 1851 she appears as 'Isabella'
In 1841 I think the family were living just off Bank Street, Bishopwearmouth
James Tuit born around 1814 (not in county)
Elizabeth Tuit born 1816 - Sunderland
James Tuit aged 15 months - Sunderland
An Elizabeth Tute died in Sunderland during the September quarter of 1852

1858, James Tuit marries Margaret Lynch (Sunderland Registrar site)
-
And from Eleanor Tute's birth found on the same site her mother's maiden name was 'Moore'
So all we need now his a marriage between James Tute (Tuit) and an Elizabeth/Isabella Moore
