Hello, trying to confirm this lady lived or was born in the Inverness area, She served as a housekeeper in the Scottish Womens Hospitals during ww1, so would of been around 25-55 in 1915. She is mentioned in a couple of books as being from Inverness and am looking to confirm that story. Be great if anyone can help.

Wonder if Mary Hughes Green was a married lady?

Hi, yes still working on it and will be for a few years to come!! I dont think she was a nurse but will see if i can find out more on her. You are a star..
-
Don't think Parkstone is a prison Alan :-[ think I'm getting muddled with Parkhurst which is on Isle of White .

Mrs Green so you are right enough.. She worked in the North of the Scotland for awhile at the end of the war.

Parkstone House was (still is as far as I can see) staff accommodation for Poole Hospital

She married a Charles Green in 1889 in Inverness [town] Inverness-shire
-
Thats excellent, any idea of where she died?
-
It looks like Charles must of died or they split as she was away from home for 4 years.
-
Where were they in 1891 census?
-
Looks like she may have died Sept Q of 1905 Stockport age down as 65 ::) There's no death in Scotland for her.
-
Hi again,
Are we on the wrong trail??
If this lady died in 1905 she can't be working in 1915 in a WW1 at Scottish Womens Hospital :-\

Well with 18 years out on age you'd have to consider that Looby

Just realised that.
Mary born 1867 would be 38 in 1905.
I can't find her on 1891 Census Scotland or England.

Anyone any luck in finding anymore more out? when did Charles die?
Many thanks Alan
-
Alan, you know we love challenges here on RC ;) I think now though to move forward on this Mary, someone needs to pay to view at least the marriage cert for Mary to Charles that has been found by Fifer in 1889. Without this you have no idea whether it is the right marriage (likely, but needs to be confirmed) and also further details on Charles.
So, likely married 1889. Missing in censuses in 1891. Looby found a very possible entry for Mary in 1901 working in England and showing as married. Possible entry in 1911 in the Midlothian area for a Mary H Green aged 43. That is where it is at for now...

I understand, where can i look into the marriage cert? Many of the women i look into i find with out to many hitch's, Mary is more elusive.
Again thank you all very much, Alan
-
Hi Alan
Mary is proving hard to find in her later years isn't she :-\ We have no clues on Charles so far. If he died young, maybe she remarried?
What years do you have her connected to the SWH?
The only source of info and details will be the image of the marriage cert, available to view on the pay to view www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I cant seem to locate the certificate :( She was in service from 1914-1919 and i know was working as a sale rep(odd i know) in the north of Scotland until 1921.

Mary Hughes Gowenlock married Charles Gibbon Green at Inverness, 30 April 1889. Charles died in Mexico, 30 July 1899, aged 40. Mary was a nurse in WW1. 1916 newspapers relate a dangerous escape she and other nurses had from occupied Serbia. In 1922 Mary married a William Allan in Edinburgh, but as Mary Hughes Gowenlock. I know nothing about William. Mary is on the 1939 register, living in Sussex with her spinster sisters Emma and Wiliamina Gowenlock. Mary died in Chichester, West Sussex in 1957 aged 89 as Mary Hughes Allan.
