Can anyone see anything on the following man: John Edward HUNTER. He was b.1868 in Co.Cavan. I found that in the will indexes for his father's will he is listed as John E Hunter, police sergant. On ancestry they have in the RIC indexes, but no further information. From Petty Session Court records I found around 1909 at Balbriggan, Co.Dublin a J E HUNTER constable in RIC.
I am just looking for details on his career, marriage, children, or death please. Katharine.

The PSNI museum in Belfast should have a copy of his service record. There is a £25 fee.

Have you found him in the 1901 or 1911 census? If not he may be listed under initials only. Here is one possibility in 1901:

There may well be other possibilities.

I thin k the following maybe of use for you
There is a civil birth record in Bailieborough 1868 V7 P459 that is most probably him
From the Wills abstract I assume his father is also John, who died May 30 1896
Therefore possible DoB April 20th 1868; Father: John HUNTER and Mother: Martha NELSON (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FP72-B6J)
If this is the correct birth John and Martha married on March 26th 1857 in Killinkere
There are two further children on line Teressa Francis b. May 14 1874 (died 1875)
and Martha b. Aug 18 1870; however I would presume there to be more as was the norm at that time
Probably 1901 census for Martha HUNTER (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000438861/)
with no results in 1911 possibly she may have died before 1911
1901 Census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Clonmel_East_Urban/Thomas_Grubb_s_Place/1710855/) showing J. E. H. as aged 30, from Cavan and not married
(I would be inclined to this Tipperary return as his religion is shown as Brethern
this differs from glensman's suggestion of a Cork address above)
1911 Census Return (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Balbriggan_Urban__Part_of/Balbriggan_Urban/971/) showing J. E. H. as aged 42, from Cavan and single
As head of the Constabulary he signed the form (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000001295/) which gives his full name!
Court records show him in
Ballybofey Co. Donegal from about 1889 to 1893
Gilbertstown, Co. Louth around 1910
Balbriggan, Co. Dublin about 1910 to after 1916
Link to 1912 Directory where named in Balbriggan (http://www.tuugo.info/SiteViewer/0340002607813?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dublin1850.com%2Fporter1912%2Fpage02.html)
He is also listed in the Sinn Fein Rebellion Handbook 1916 as the Head Constable in Balbriggan
There is also an online reference to him still being in that role in May 1917
There are a couple of possibilities for deaths but you would need a few more clues or a bit of trudging to discover more I think!
