Looking for info on my 5x Gr. Grandfather Alexander Gibson. Married to Elizabeth Ritchie (or Richie), no date but first child (James) was born in 1774 at Closeburn.
Have found a death notice from Closeburn Parish 1791 that says 'died in Gilchristland' but haven't been able to find out for sure if it's him, or where Gilchristland is/was. Any help much appreciated.

Could this be him....................says married too although a wife isn't present ???

I noticed this on the 1851 census page........................."Order a photocopy of the original census page and have it mailed to you * (£2.00)"
The original is cheaper to download on Scotlandspeople website :P

Hi, the census says this Alexander is unmarried. The Alexander I'm looking for did have a son named for him but he would have only been 63 when the census was done. I did see something about him being in Gilchristland though. All I've been able to find on that place is that there are holiday cottages for let. Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

Sorry..............in my hurry I saw an "M".....................Male instead of Married.
I shouldn't be doing 2 things at once ;D

Thank you for the clues Annie, hope to make the trip to Dumfriesshire in the next year or so to see where my family began.

Gilchristland is on the edge of Closeburn parish. It is on the road over the Ae Forest to Ae Village and Kirkmichael.

Maybe someone with access or a subscription to British Newspaper Archive could help?

You could also ask for a look-up on a separate thread ???

Hi Canadagal
Last time I was at the Records Office in Edinburgh I did some research on Alexander Gibson of Glencrosh, the tenant of Gilchristland farm, wondering if he might tie in to my family - no links so far though!
He died on 15 December 1851 and in his will left bequests to the surviving children of his deceased siblings Robert, Ann, Margaret, Sarah and Elizabeth. Robert's daughter was Mary Gibson McTurk. Wonder if any of these names coincide with children of the Alexander Gibson you are looking for?
Incidentally, I was looking for my 3x gt grandfather Alexander Gibson who was a farmer, married in Closeburn in 1793 to Ann Brown. Still haven't tracked him down!

Hi Canadagal,
I am a Canada gal too, and have been since I immigrated from Scotland as a child. My great grandmother, on my father's side, came from Dumfriesshire. Jane MATHISON (1857 - 1948) was born at Glencairn to James MATHISON and Mary LAIDLAW. James had a sister, Janet MATHISON b. abt. 1833, who married a James GIBSON (b. abt. 1819) in Caerlaverock in 1857. I believe James GIBSON was a merchant of some sort and had a shop in the town of Dumfries. This couple are still to be found on all census in Caerlaverock from 1861 - 1901. Any relation?
Mary
