I'd like to find out if my grandfathers siblings managed to escape from poverty when they left Scotland and how many cousins my father actually had ;
in 1923 Agnes b1885 who married JAMES ROBERTSON travelled with son James Robertson aged 3
and her siblings James aged 22 tinsmith+ Chrissy Macdermid aged 16 umbrella maker .
James married Sarah Ross in 1925 Brooklyn
they had at least 2 children James Kyle MacDermid 1930 d 1977
Chrissy 1907-1992 married John H Kelley b1906 also left Scotland 1923
they also had at least 2 children born in the 1930's
Their contact in USA was a cousin or uncle John mcfarlane
youngest brother John b1910 travelled in1929
passage paid by his brother so presumably James had got a good job
he died in 1982 aged71 but i don't know if he married or had children .
Any help appreciated
youngest brother John b1910 travelled 6years later

The James MacDermid who married Sarah Ross in Brooklyn in 1925 was my Uncle Jim. My father, David Ross, was Sarah's brother. I knew James and Sarah's children, my cousins James and Jean. Both James and Jean were much older than I; their children were my contemporaries.
You asked about “escape from poverty”. Certainly my Uncle Jim and Aunt Sarah lived a comfortable middle class life. I spent time at their homes in Dumont, NJ and in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Indeed James and Sarah's son James died in 1977. I attended the funeral. I never knew my cousin James or his family well, and I have lost track of them.
I knew James and Sarah's daughter Jean better. Jean married a fellow named (*). Jean and (*) had two children, (*) and (*). Jean died in 1994 in New Smyrna Beach.
I know quite a bit more about this family, and I'll be glad to share it if you're interested.

that's really good
I will ask my aunt Mary if she knew or remembers cousins james + sarah .they probably never met being in different countries .
It would be nice to have photos.
She will be having a 90th birthday in May so I hope to see her .
Just a frivolent question were any of the cousins redheads ?
Aunt Mary told me that my father Eric (mac) was teased at school in Plymouth for his red hair (fairly pale ) . I didn't know this in the 70's he had a beautiful auburn beard tho his hair was light brown . there are more red heads in Scotland ... I wanted to be chestnut and dyed my hair various shades even before fostering a beautiful "ginger" haired girl in Wales . As far as I know sheas never teased for her colouring ..quite common in Cardiff in the 80's
pm me + i will share all research documents i have found so far .
It was the generation before who was poor ...my grandfather Tommy who joined navy also lived quite comfortably .later..he was a special constable at some point .They owned their own bungalow in Plymouth .
My sister Alisoun visited the birth place and has a photo of the old Macdermid cottages before they were demolished .

Thanks
Today I went through a stash of my grandfather's photos most are undated and unnamed .apart from wee Jim Robertson b.1920who turns up between the ages of 2 and 8.and I.m fairly sure that the photo of a couple on their 6th anniversary is of his parents Agnes nee MacDermid and James Robertson .they are lovely little snaps .
It would be great to find the descendant s. To pass them on to .

tried to pm David Ross but it says his message box is full
disappointed ..my aunt was a hairs breadth away from finding out about her American cousins

He doesn't have enough posts to use the PM system. If he posts twice more, it should work.

Hi Bridgid,
My great grandparents are James and Sarah MacDermid. They lived in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
James came over from Scotland when he was about 18, and Sarah when she was about 9 months old.
They had 2 children, son James and daughter Jean.

Hello Jessica
..that makes us 2nd cousins once removed I think.
Ive made contact with some of the other Macdermid cousin descendants via DNA links on Ancestry .
My father and his sister were nearly shipped to USA to stay with an aunt in WW2 but as their father was at sea when emigration documents had to be signed by him they ended up staying in UK .
