I was contacted by a relative who was told that his grandmother attended university in Ireland, before immigrating to the US in 1912.
Was this possible? i find it a bit hard to believe, the family was RC and lived in County Meath, father was a farmer/shop keeper.
Where would I be able to look for this... Or is it too far fetched?

Is it possible that she might have gone to somewhere like a teacher training college rather than university? American 'colleges' are the same as 'universities' but in the U.K. there is usually a difference.

Thank you everyone. I shall hunt on.
Aghadowey: I really dont know. She immigrated in 1912, married in 1913 and had her first of 5 children in 1914.... And I have never found anything if her teaching in the US.
-
Where was she on 1911 Census??
-
Nope.
She is in the 1901 census (Elizabeth Hevey) but I cant find her in the 1911 Irish or England census. I thought if I could find her in 1911 it would clear things up... But I just cant find her.
-
Cant find her sisters Bridget and Mary in 1911 either. ???

Going by that article Erato posted, it would seem university as we know today only began to take women from 1908 so you wouldn't expect there were many in university by 1911.
If you leave the name blank, female, 30+/-5, RC, student, into the 1911 Census you get 37 results, with things like Medical Student, Art Student, Teaching Student , these ladies appear to be living at home or as boarders, then there is a few as just student on what's listed as a College Boarding School Return.

I wonder if the girls are in school, are they listed by initial or similar

The 1940 US census [if she lived that long] gives the number of years of education completed including college/university. For example, H3 = three years of high school; C7 = seven years of college.
-
Hi Sinann... Yes, that's the family!
Hi Erato: in 1940 Elizabeth was an inmate of a psychiatric hospital in New York. I will have to recheck, but I think the information was not complete.
-
She isn't in the list of graduates of UCD.
I've looked at Hevey, Heavey, Heaphy, Heavy

Thank you for looking Eadaoin. Perhaps it was just a rumor.

Hi Eadaoin, Do you mind if I ask where a list of UCD graduates is available please?

Hi Eadaoin, Do you mind if I ask where a list of UCD graduates is available please?
I have the N.U.I. Calendar for 1933 (fat book) . . . it gives a list of all graduates up to then - presumably covers UCD, UCC and UCG. Feel free to ask!

Thanks eadaoin. I never even thought of it being an offline source. Thought I'd missed something new coming online!

Thank you Erato! I double checked the 1940 US census and it puts an 8... So I guess that solves that question!
-
That would indicate eight years of primary education - pretty standard for the time. But, since she was a patient in a psychiatric hospital in 1940, the information may have been supplied by a staff member and may not have been accurate. Is similar information given for other patients or does the information appear to be individualized?
-
I think I believe what is on the census, at least it didnt seem far fetched... It varies from a 2 to C-4...
Yes, an 8 seemed standard to me as well.
Thanks!

May be a bit OT, but I still recall the campaign to keep Christ Church (AKA "The House"), Oxford, male only. The slogan was "A woman's place is in the home, not the House."
-
I see a Mary and Elizabeth HAVEY in Dublin on 1911 census.

Thank you so much! Elizabeth's husband had the same profession! I am going to have to dig around a bit more.
