Title: 1901census look-up completed
Post by: jericho on Saturday 09 July 05 23:53 BST (UK)
Hi, can someone please help, the following two children I am looking for were orphaned when their parents Rosetta and Jonas Searles died within a year of each other between 1898/1899.

I am looking for:
Jonah Searles born 1887
Alfred Searles born 1895
both  were born in Canning Town West Ham. Thanks.

I couldn't find either of these boys in the 1901 search with details as given. There are a lot of Searles in the area though. If they went to orphanages they a) may be just about anywhere incl Canada by 1901 and b) they might be unrecognisable because the records were often vague about where born in the census.

I did find a third possibility that they may have been 'adopted' by other family, because this group caught my eye

RG13/1582 f91  WHam St Lukes
Albert Searles b1854 Kilburn
Susan b 1864 Canning Town
John b 1886 ditto
Albert b 1896 ditto

John & Jonah, Alfred & Albert seem similar enough to be switchable, and usually the eldest son is named after the father, not the second born so many years later  (some may have been lost in between).  Do Albert & Susan figure in your researches for earlier years?

Doreen

I have actually looked at this family before and wondered the same thing, I do know that Albert was an older brother of Jonas the boys father, I have been able to find Albert in most census except the 1891 unless of course this is the 1891 in that case I will need to get the 1901 for Albert and Susan. Thanks, can you please let me know what census this is.

It is the 1901 ref (RG13).

I would say that if he had a brother Albert, then it looks very likely to me. I will see if I can dig out some more as well.

Hi again
Found him in 1871  RG10/1631 f10 (Plaistow)
and
1891 RG12/1321 f28 (Canning Town)

You need to see the sheets yourself, so if you don't have the Essex disks, send me a Personal Message with your email address & I'll attach screen dumps for you.

Complete blank on 1881

Doreen
