Hi all
I have just discovered all the RC records at the National Library-what a great resource.
Carrying on from this post re their son Michael Phillips - link below.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=412816.0
I have found a marriage at Castlegar 3 May 1830
Thos Phillips to Ellen Bourke
Witnesses: John Laffy & Marg Geraghty Mendo-house (should this be Menlo-house?)
To repeat: Michael was baptised Annaghdown 2 April 1837
Thomas & Eleanor Bourke
Spns: Mich Phillips @ Mary King
I have scrolled through all Annaghdown and Castlegar records and cannot find baptism records for any siblings of Michael.
Any suggestions on what to try now?
Many thanks
Annie

Hi Annie, found these baptisms of siblings for Michael.
Walter Phillips
bap:20 January 1845
place:Annaghdown
father:Thomas Phillips
mother:Ellen Burke
sponsors:Bernard Phillips & Ellen Crowe
Thomas Phillips
bap:29 December 1848
place: St Nicholas Combined N & E
parents:same
sponsors:Walter Burke & Eliza Phillips
Francis Phillips
bap:14 July 1850
place: St Nicholas Combined N & E
parents:same
sponsors:Bernard Phillips & Celia Clarke
I found these on rootsireland.ie. They were the only ones I found. Taking into account the famine happened between Michael's birth and Walter's maybe they lost a few children either before or during the famine. Hope this helps, Kim

Hi, just let me correct what I said. The Irish famine by most accounts would be from 1845/1846 to 1850. Prior to this people were having a difficult time and there were instances of problems with crops arising. I didn't mean it to sound like the famine was between 1837-1845, just that problems were already starting. Kim

Wow thanks so much Kim, what a break through.
I have found a niece of Michael's today also living in Greymouth, New Zealand- Mary Jane PHILLPS bc 1866 ( not sure where she was born). I can now look to see if any of the brothers maybe also came to NZ.
Many thanks

I've posted on your other thread too ~
I'm just concerned that you are making a presumption that the Annagdown family are yours without any proof.
Have you any NZ paperwork to link to this family ?

See my reply in the other thread Tara. Thanks

Hi Annie
OK Working for a mo on a presumption that Thomas & Ellen are the correct couple ~
Have you noted that this family moved ~
The first two children that were found for you were baptised in Annaghdown.
The later children were baptised in St. Nicholas.N & E which is Galway City.
If you look at GV you will see that there are no Phillips in Annaghdown.

There are a lot of Burkes but that gives you no clue as there are a LOT of Burkes in Galway .
So, also to note that Thomas and Ellen married in Castlegar.
This church is about halfway between Annaghdown and Galway City and covers the townland of Menlo which we have mentioned.
So, it would seem the family were transient.
So no Phillips on Rahoon GV
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/rahoon.htm
SOOOO I eventually found a Thomas Phillips living in Wood Quay in Galway City GV.

I'd be pretty sure given your timeline and records found that this is the Thomas that you are hoping is your ancestor.

So, the name Bernard Phillips shows on one of the records found.
This is a rare combination of Christian and Surname in Galway so I think this chap should be followed up to sure to see if there is a connection.

Thanks for both those posts, I will investigate further. Phillips certainly doesn't appear to be a very common name in Galway. Unfortunately in New Zealand it is much more common ie: like 8 possible deaths for Mary Jane IF she died in NZ.
Thanks

This Patrick Phillips Will ties back to the two lady shopkeepers on William Street in Galway City.

Did Michael ever give an occupation for his father ?

No, sadly not

What did Michael work at ?

There is a Bernard Phillips studying Agriculture in Queens College in Galway in 1851.
Tara

This seems to be the Bernard in the census going by the wife's name and the younger children

Did you get a year of birth for Mary Jane Phillips that you are working on ?

Papers Past (our newspaper archive) has a Jane Phillips singing in Greymouth aged 12 in 1878 so I'm working on 1866.
Mary Jane known as Jennie seemed to travel a lot, there are photos of an aunt, Mrs Whelan, in Dublin. There are 2 Galway born entries living in Dublin in 1901, Elizabeth Whelan aged 77 and Bridget aged 71.
Women got the right to vote in NZ in 1893, Mary Jane is not listed in 1893 or 1896, she appears for the 1st time in 1919, therefore I suspect she wasn't in NZ at the time.

. . . And again what did Michael work at ?

This page is FAB for Galway City and you will see on this link a Phillips from Galway City.
I suggest adding a message and see what happens !
