Looking for pictures of this house that my great, great aunt built in the 20's. My Mother visited her great Aunt there as a kid, Sarah Ann Chapman. It was on the Queens Park Parade in Silverstone. My mother also said that Aunt Sarah called it Silverstone House. My great, great Aunts married name was Sarah Ann Hill and she owned a laundry on Semilong Road.

Could it be this one..............

Yes, George Chapman is my grandfather and Sarah is his aunt. She died in 1934.
-
Could you confirm that this is the correct area, not Silverstone village?

Being reasonably local, I have a street map of Northampton. Queen's Park Terrace is shown as being on the east side of the Kingsthorpe Road (A508) and running northwards from the Balmoral Road turning.
Checking on Google Streetview, there's a terrace of houses with a white sign on the front of one of them saying "Queen's Park Terrace" (right opposite an Asda supermarket and a self-store centre). Unfortunately, the area between the Balmoral Road turning and the start of the houses would appear to have been redeveloped and now contains a block of flats.

I'll check with my Mum to see if she remembers the house location on the map. She's 90 and I hope it come back to her when she sees the map. Thanks, Jim

Hi, Queen's Park Parade is still standing.
I can see your relative mentioned in the 1928 directory under Laundry
(Offices and Works) Semilong Road under Mrs S A Hill.
Although not in the list of private residents for Queen's Park Parade.

I am sure I have seen this elsewhere.
Henry Hill her husband was from Australia.
Some of the addresses were 3, Lower Hester Street and 26 Semilong Road
and Sarah stated Silverstone, Northamptonshire as P.O.B.
They have an adopted daughter Harriett Hill on the 1901 census.

I can see a probate record for Sarah which states Silverstone House,
Queens Park Parade in 1934.

Thanks Seahall, All your threads are about Sarah Hill. I'm looking for a picture of her house so my Mum can see it. Hope to see her soon to see if she can identify the house on a map I downloaded from this site. When she does I will post it.
Thanks, jimbo220

That is my Great Great Aunt Sarahs house. Thanks for it my Mom enjoyed seeing it again.
-
Just because I am slightly perplexed: we were told that the great great aunt built it, but it is semi-detached, so did she build both sides of it?
-
Sorry chempat, My mother thought it was a stand alone house and the builders built it for Sarah. The house had steam heat installed with radiator. She saw the house last when she was around 5 to 8 tears old she is now 89. It is very interesting had the photos jog her memory and I enjoy talking about her childhood with her. Thanks for the support and we all live in the USA now.

Hi Jim
I have just looked again at the photos that I went and took and the house
next door seems older than Silverstone House.
I suppose a Street Directory of the period might show when both properties
were noted.
If no one does it first I will have a look next week.

Thanks Sandy, After my Mother identified the house she said it had a three car garage in back. You have gone way beyond what I ever expected and for that I thank you!!

You are welcome Jim.
I went to the Town Library today to look at the register of electors
and found Local Studies was shut yet again therefore I couldn't look
at the books, but I will. :)

Thanks Sandy

Here we go Jim.
I have looked at the registers of electors and they state as follows.
1st entry for Sarah is noted in 1932 at No. 51, then in 1933 with Edward Ward,
then in 1934 just Edward.
Therefore it seems as though the house was built between 1932-1933.
Sadly there was no directory for 1931.
I will look at the images later more when I get home.

Just managed to find a Kelly's for 1931 no numbers 51-53 so 1932
1st mention.
Sandy
-
Sandy, Can you get me pictures of 51 Queens Park Parade? Thanks Jim
-
Sandy, Mom told me the house was left to Herbert Wooding who was killed in WW11. Then his father and mother acquired it, Fred Wooding. Hope this helps. Jim
-
Hi Jim.
I could try and get you some pictures of the houses thereabouts but not
straight away. Hubby and I are dealing with our best friend's estate at the
moment who sadly passed away in March. Hubby is the executor of his will
and we are the only beneficiaries and are trying to get his estate sorted out.
If no one else can do it soon I will try.

Just checked a 1936 directory at home Whipples and it states that
Frederick Wooding is living at 53, Queen's Park Parade.
Sandy
-
Sandy, Forget about the picture, the information you got about Fred Wooding is proof that Sarah owned 53 Queens Park Parade. Mom also said that a gentleman lived there with Sarah that might be Edward. We just done attending to an estate here , nerve racking experience to say the least. Take care of your business first I'm in no great big hurry . Thanks Jim
-
Hi Jim.

If you would like to P.M. me I will e-mail it too you.
