Not open very much, for people who work full-time.

This Saturday (5th) is one they are open 9-4.30 but you can't request documents between 12:45 and 2pm.

You can search online what they might have, from here: http://dcc.dorsetforyou.com/CalmView/advanced.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog

They also state that parish registers are available through Ancestry?

Does your local library have Ancestry Library Edition (which is free to use!)?

Alternatively, try Dorset History Centre's research service:

Thanks for the feedback. I will submit a request to the Dorset History Centre. Being in Australia make it a bit tricky to get in to the centre. :)

Melbury Sampford for the period I'm looking for is not on opcdorset.  :(  I have also search on Ancestry.com with no luck.

thank you for the guidence

a bit away from your request , however , link gives some extraction for burials ...

this particular parish has some mild difficulties to say the least, as it was a private church from my understanding.    I dont believe there was actual microfilming done and you will have to address any searches through the local history group and fees will probably apply.    Can I be outward and ask to what surname you are seeking and what exactly have you got as there maybe a second solution, through Burkes Landed Gentry volumes or the London Genealogical Society...  Could you please elaborate a little and I will try to post an answer.

Thanks Again, Essentially I'm trying to trace the birth and parents of my 4th Great Grandfather Richard Palmer of Melbury Osmund.  The only indication that he might have been Christened in Melbury Sampford is this familysearch page https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:M19N-1ZT

The details are provided in my original post. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=578742.0

Any help is greatly appreciated.

That entry, on Family Search, is a Patron Submission?
Which means that it didn't come from a documented source - and may not even be correct! ::)

There are some transcriptions on FindMyPast of Dorset baptisms, the nearest date-wise being:

Little Bredy - 9 January 1758 - son of Joseph and Jenny.  1758 via the Dorset Family History Society transcription, 1757 from the Family Search transcription.
Powerstock - 18 October 1789 - son of Thomas and Mary

Melbury Sampford baptisms on FindMyPast appear to start in 1813 - there are no instances of the surname Palmer.

"of Melbury Osmund."

just in case,  when there is a record indicating "of" somewhere, they may not come from that area in the sense of being born or christened in that place and are merely landholders or are employed in that place.  I have noticed with Dorset in particular that a lot of records are reflective of this and when investigated actually are of external locales.

A lot of folk that lived in Melbury Osmund actually used Yeovil churches for some reason.

I will also add that the Palmer family , amongst other occupations, were parish rectors in various locations in that area extending as far as Wiltshire.

As Kgarrad points out the entry on fs.o is submitted......

Without trying to discourage you , I think the material has to further investigated but I am not sure how to advise you on that... good luck.

Dorset Family History Society have transcribed Melbury Sampford, the records are on FindMyPast, but as someone has already pointed out, baptisms only go back to 1813. We do have marriages back to 1606 though, so it may be that earlier baptism records have been lost. We are still transcribing.
If you would like some personal assistance, the website is www.Dorsetfhs.org.uk where there is a form to request research - our charges are very reasonable. It might be best to telephone first - best day to talk about research is a Wednesday between 10am and 3pm GMT. Contact details on website. Hope that helps.

Where would Bishops Transcripts be held? - they might be really useful in this case.  You would need the Salisbury Diocesan Record Office for that - I don't know where that would be.

Sorry, I've just been told that from the 16th Century until 1832 Dorset was in Bristol Diocese (which seems a bit odd, but there you are!)

I realise that this search is a few weeks/months old now but only just spotted it. I live just up the road from the Dorset History Centre so if there is any way that I can help you with your search just let me know and I'll go in and see what I can find for you.
