Title: Walpole East Bilney
Post by: neiljestaveley on Friday 02 October 15 15:22 BST (UK)
Hi I'm looking for some help with the Walpoles of East Bilney, Norfolk.

I've managed to get back to a William Walpole poss birth date of 1727, death 1788. Who married a Jane Reeve, but then I come to a dead end

Family trees on the Web suggest he was related to Sir Robert Walpole, but I can't find any solid info on this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Why do you think they are in East Bilney?
William Walpole of Hales married Jane Reeve of Raveningham 19 January 1747/8.
They seem to have baptized the children in Cawston unless its another William and Jane Walpole

Thank you, I hadn't  managed to find out that. That seems to be the same William and Jane.

It seems they moved to Cawston and then the children moved to East Bilney where the family remained.

I wonder why they moved from Hales? That's also a fair distance from the Walpoles of Houghton. I still can't find back before them?

By way of introduction, my great-grandmother was Tamar Walpole, whose great-great-great-great-grandfather was the William Walpole, who died in Cawston in 1788.

From my researches, I think that William and Jane had twelve and not eleven children. I believe that the additional child was another Elizabeth, who was buried in Cawston on 23 July 1754 (not 1764). There is no baptismal record for her, which makes me think she did not for very long.

According to William and Jane's Raveningham marriage register, he was from Hales.

Can anyone throw any light on his birth and antecedents?

Yes, William was of Hales at time of the Marriage but it does not mean that he was born there.

Entries on FreeREG, St Margaret, Hales, Norfolk

Burials;
1) JOHN Walpole, 1788 (no date given) age 78 (1710)
Son of JOHN/ELIZABETH, Notes; Late Eliz: Millar spinster. Near 40 years Clerk of this Parish
2) ANN Walpole, 21 May 1790, age 77(1713), Widow of JOHN, Late SPOONER Spinster

Marriage;
JOHN Walploe/Ann SPOONER, 23 Nov 1736

They Baptise 8 Children there;
LEWIS 1737/JOHN 1738/SAMUEL 1739-40/SAMUEL 1740/ANN 1743/WILLIAM 1746/ROBERT 1751/ELIZABETH 1757

Now maybe a Brother of William so if you can find where John Walpole/Elizabeth Millar Married  and a Baptsism for John c 1710, you may find he had a Brother WILLIAM c 1717!

I visited the Norfolk Records Office yesterday but could find no records of the marriage of John and Ann or of the births of John and William in the Hales records.

Either the search goes on or it has hit the buffers!

A family tree on Ancestry UK gives William's date of birth as 25 June 1717 in Hales, which tallies with his age (71) at death.

I have asked for details as to how this information was obtained.

No response as yet but will send reminder.

However, I am wondering whether this is the correct William Walpole.

The East Bilney parish register shows his burial date as 26 September 1830 and that his age at death was 72, which means he was born circa 1758 and not 1763 as stated in the majority of family trees on Ancestry.

The one record I can find for a William Walpole born at that time was the son of Robert and Susanna Walpole nee Dowe, who was baptised in Attleborough, Norfolk, on 4 September 1758.

The mystery thickens!
