Dear All
Can someone please help me before I pull all my hair out and the cats too.
I'm trying to find Frances Marian Miles born in 1858/59 in Leighton Buzzard.
I can only find her on the 1891 and 1901 census in Nottingham. At some time she
married a Mr Leet/Leat but she was widowed by 1884/85.
Best wishes

Hi Pepsimax
I suspect you know more than you are telling here? ;D
Do you have a census return you could post to give a clearer idea of her details? Have you the names of her children and their births (if any?) these would help tie her down to an area for earlier censuses.
How do you know she is widowed in 1884/5?
Better to put as much as you know and we will have a good try from there.
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi Arranroots
Thanks for your reply. You are right, I do have more info. I've found 4 traces of her,
all in Nottingham. 2 census returns and 2 birth certificates.
June 14th 1885 she had a daughter Jane Ellen Whiting Leat-----no father named.
Mothers name Frances Marian Leat formerly Miles.A housekeeper.
September 28th 1886 she had an other daughter Eva Whiting Leet--no father.
Mothers name Frances Marian Leet. A housekeeper.
1891 Census Nottingham-----Frances Marian Leet---Widowed . Head.
born Leighton Buzzard.
Jane Ellen W Leet
Eva W Leet
William Whiting--Lodger. born Wilbarston Norths.1833
1891 Census Nottingham as above.
William Whiting died in Feb 1903. Jane Ellen was married in August 1903 as Jane
Ellen Leet Whiting. Eva ----my Grandmother---married in 1913 as Eva Leet Whiting.
I've only just found out Frances Marians maiden name from Jane Ellens birth cert.
On the 1881 Census William Whiting was married to a lady called Harriet and had
a grocers shop in Nottingham.
All the census info I have is from a cousin of mine. I really must check it myself.
I can't say for certain that William Whiting was the father of Jane or Eva as from
other info he may have had a son also called William.
I have not found Frances Marians death yet, but I live in hope.
I do hope that all this helps.
Thank you
Best wishes

Aha! :)
thanks for the extra info - have found the 1891 census now. William describes himself as a widow - have you found his wife on this census?
Will see what else I can find.

Sorry to say, no progress.
Do you have the daughters' marriage certs? Just wondered if there was anything else on them - father's name. witness names etc that might help?
I am wondering if MILES was another married name? Or maybe mistranscribed for MILLS?
You may have to ask for a BVRI look up. Or have you tried the IGI for the family?

One thing - probably a red herring - I noticed that in 1901 William is described as an army pensioner. In an earlier census (forget now which one, I am so confused!) there is a Thomas LEET in the army in Aldershot. Just a possibility that they were army pals and Frances took william in on the strength of that??
