Title: George and Maria Drury
Post by: Viery on Friday 30 October 15 20:00 GMT (UK)
Can anyone look up anything on George Drury for me? After several years of not delving I am picking up my files again to restart my research, though I was never proficient.

George and Maria Drury were my G. grand parents, on 28.Aug.1878 my G. mother Florence Ellen was born in Gosfield, Essex, according to her birth certificate.

Please could someone look up the marriage for George and Maria and also if possible Georges' birth.

Many thanks in advance.

Looks like she was the child of older parents - maybe the youngest child?

In 1881 she is 2 and her parents are 49 and 47 so the marriage could have been some time back.

Possible one in Mar 1854 Halstead where one of the two grooms is George Drury and one of the two brides is Maria Newman - does the birth certificate for Florence confirm her mother was Maria Newman?

Sorry forgot to add George and Maria did not marry in St Catherine's Gosfield nor at St Andrews in Halstead, perhaps a Registrar's Office.

There is only 1 Maria Newman in Gosfield in 1841;

1841 Census
Gosfield, Essex
HO107/332/2/Gosfield
Norman Newman, 37, Ag Lab
Mary Newman, 36
Mary Newman, 10
James Newman, 8
MARIA Newman, 6
Ann Newman, 4
William Newman, 2
Sarah Jeggo, 13
Eliza Jeggo, 11
Mary Jeggo, 9
Page before we have;
Joseph Jeggo, 70, Ag Lab
Henry Jeggo, 20, Ag Lab
Thomas Warren, 20, Ag Lab
George Newman, 14, Ag Lab**

1861 Norman is under NAAMAN Newman born c 1804, S Hedingham, Essex.
1851 NAMAN Norman c 1803 Inegam, Essex (living away from Home and Marrried)

1881 we have;
Naaman Newman, 76
Mary Ann Newman, 86

*** George Newman married Frances Willard 1850 and names his Father as Naaman Newman (Familysearch. Org)

Ooh on Familysearch to confirm above;

Marriage;
26 Feb 1854 Halstad, Essex
George DRURY, Father JAMES Drury
Maria NEWMAN, Father NOAMAN Newman
Both have Residence as White Ash Green

Looking on F/S it looks to me that Naaman was married twice, 1st to a FRANCES, then MARY

Trish :)

Marriage (FreeREG)
30 May 1823, St Peter, Sible Hedingham
Naaman ? NEWMAN, Bachelor
Frances MORTIMER, Spinster

Baptisms same Church;
ELIZA 10 March 1824 to Naamah/Francis, buried 22 June 1831 age 7 years
ANNE 10 March 1830 to Naamon/Mary, buried 9 Dec 1830 age 9mths
JAMES 24 March 1832 to Naaman/Mary
(FreeREG)

Now something strange is going on here as a FRANCES Newman was buried 19 May 1833 age 32 (1801)
Abode Halstead Road
The Burials of Ann/Eliza have the same address as do their Baptisms

Was Naaman living with 2 Women?

Think I may have worked it out

Marriage Reg March 1853 Halstead 4a 329
Mary Ann JEGGO/Charles PLUMB on same page

Marriage is on F/S, Fathers Isaac PLUMB and Joseph JEGGO

1871 Naamon/Mary have a Granddaughter Ellen Plumb with them;
Naamin Newman, 65
Mary Newman, 12 (should be 72)
Ellen Plumb, 21

1861 she is down as their Neice

So to sumnarise;

Looks like Mary is the Daug of Joseph Jeggo and Mary
That would explain all the Jeggos on 1841 Census with the Newmans

Cant find a Marriage for Naamon Newman (Widower) to Mary Jeggo (Widow) though.

St Catherines Gosfield Naaman Newman widower married Mary Jeggo widow 24/09/1833

Widow Mary Jeggo was previously married to Joseph Jeggo and her maiden name was Mary Ann Springett.

Hope this helps

Thanks very much for your help. This means that I have almost finished tracing my (paternal) family to the 1800's. Obviously I need to check and consolidate by obtaining birth and marriage certificates, but to take my research back before the 1800's, have no idea really where to start.

I still have a knotty problem with my Ellingfords at Bocking, so will repost.
best, susanne

Title: Naaman Newman
Post by: Viery on Tuesday 26 January 16 20:54 GMT (UK)
Hello again - have hit a brick wall for Naaman Newman, my g.g. grandfather - I can only find an approximate date of birth for him, no sign of any birth, baptism or parents.

From census records and postings above, Naaman was born about 1803-4 at Sible Hedingham,
Castle Hedingham or "Inegam"

30.5.1823 Married to Frances Mortimer, 1 daughter Mary Ann
24.9.1833 Married to Mary Jeggo (Widow), nee Springett at Gosfield, Essex

1835, birth of my g. grandmother Maria Newman, later Drury

If anyone can point me in the right direction or find records for Naaman's birth and parentage, I will be thankful!

Susanne,

On freereg there is a baptism on 23/05/1802 at Sible Hedingham - "Noamey Newman" parents James and Ann" no sex is given and the transcriber suggests the name to be Naomi. Looking at the original parish records the name looks more like "Naamey". I can understand the transcribers comments but it could well be the name of baby Naaman ! There is nothing else for Naaman in that period.

I should have added that the baptism is at St Peters Sible Hedingham.

Good find Mike.

JAMES/ANNE also Baptised a same Church;
PENINNAH, 12 Aug 1804 (Female)
REBEKAH, 22 Dec 1809

Possible Marriage;
James NEWMAN to Ann PRIST, 23 Dec 1800, St Mary the Virgin, Gestingthorpe
James was a Bachelor, Anns marital status not noted

Thanks for the siblings Trish-

Naaman, Rebecca and Peninah all Old Testament names - possibly not that unusual given the era.

I had noted the marriage and thought it a possibility.  Gestingthorpe is within walking distance from the Hedinghams (I have done it myself).

Prist is not a local name  (nor is Priest) - I have looked at the original and have some doubts. The freereg transcribers have a very difficult task given the handwriting on some of the Parish records!

A little more circumstantial evidence is that Naaman had children named Ann and James.
