Title: 1940 Census look up please
Post by: JulesT on Monday 23 November 15 15:36 GMT (UK)
Any further information from the following 1940 census entry would be very much appreciated.

Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachussetts

Beatrice M
spouse- Uclide Therrien
birth abt 1909
res. in 1935 - Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachussets
res: Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts.
The person I am searching was documented in Woonsocket, Providence, Rhode Island 1920 census (Teriace Uclide, stepson, aged 11.) with his mother/stepfather Josephine/Wilfred Beffre.

No much trace after that and I would like this to be him :)  Thanks for any help given.

Hi,

Jules, if you are trying to figure out out if the person in the 1940 census is the same as in the 1920 census, they are not.

Euclide A Therrien Obit 1997: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKW2-RGFQ

His birth: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FXH9-W11

The person you seek in 1920 census.

That family in 1925 census. Not sure why Euclide isn't  listed on the Family Search transcription?

I'm certain this is Josephine and the 2 children in the 1910 census. They are listed with last name Deforrest?. Names age and POBs all match what is known. There is a transcription error for Euclide's age. The actual census image has 1 6/12 ( 1 yr. 6 months). It should read age 1 or 2 for of him, not 19.

This Euclide appears to be with his parents in Gardner, Worcester Co., Massachusetts in 1920.  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MF9J-WKQ

Since the person you're looking for was in Rhode Island in 1920 and born there, I agree this is the wrong guy.

Thanks guys, I've been sitting here staring at the computer for 15 minutes trying to figure out if he is mine. ???

I'm dipping my toes back into this line again after several years of not searching, a house move, illness and a new computer. ;)   I was hoping that the passage of time would make it clearer...or not.

I have quite a few bits and pieces of information that I have saved along the way but I've failed to connect it all together due to the changing relationships/names.

The Uclid I am searching for is the one named as Uclid Deforret in 1910.

Thanks again.

Jules

There's an attempted border crossing on 27 Feb 1925 at St. Albans, Vermont to Canada by Euclide Terise, age 16, general labourer, trying to go from Rhode Island to St. John's, Quebec via railroad.  He had no money on him and was rejected as a likely public charge.

??? I've found a Raymond Deforest, father and mothers name etc. fit.  There is also a death in LA 12/4/83 for a Raymond Euclid Deforest, born 12 November 1908.

Why don't their names ever stay the same. :-[

I have that record Shelley, thanks.

Jules...

off to sleep on it all.

The Social Security Death Index entry for Raymond De Forest born 12 Nov 1908 says his Social Security number was issued in Rhode Island before 1951.

And a possible Raymond DeForest marriage - https://beta.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VN51-L21

Perhaps he tried to cross the border, stayed in Vermont, and opted for a new or reverted to an old name?

Do you have an obituary for his mother or stepfather?

No obituary for either mother or stepfather.

Wilfred Beffre died 1 June 1952, Norwalk, Connecticut.
Josephine Beffre died 7 Nov 1950, Norwalk, Connecticut.

Have you tried contacting the Norwalk public library?  It looks like they will do obituary look-ups.

I did find death/funeral notices for Wilfred in the Bridgeport newspapers, but no detail about his family was given.

That appears to be a marriage record for the correct Raymond. His brother Elias got married 3 years later in Vermont.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2V79-2LD

What I don't understand is why the last name is different and that also includes the father's last name being different also?

On both marriage records they have the age & POB for Elias  & Raymond Euclid, the same as what is known from the census records, plus both list Josephine La Fay as the their mother, so we know we have the correct pair of brothers. The father's first name on both is Eli, but the last names differ? (Eli Deforest & Elias J Theriac). The 1910 census states Josephine has been married 7 years (1903) in her present marriage, which would indicate both brothers are have the same father. Why the difference in last names for the father?

Elias died in 1977.

Thanks, that helps.

Not sure which thread to post this in, but since this is most recent and active I'll post here.

In the other thread there was mention of an  Eli Teriac who died in 1947 California.

Here is a link to the death certificate for that person.

Shelley and RJ137 thanks for the links.  I apologise for not posting the link to my previous thread, I hope I haven't wasted your time. :-[

Josephine Lafay also had a daughter Josephine who died in 1906, presumably to the same father as both boys.

Searching for my FIL's fatherbeen complicated by my lack of original information and all the name changes.

I found a more detailed obit for Wilfred Beffre in the Bridgeport Telegram.  It said he was born in Granby, Canada, had been a resident of Norwalk for 12 years, was a member of the French-American club, and was survived by two step-sons, Elias Teriac and Raymond De-Forest, both of Norwalk, and a niece and nephew in Canada.

I'm forever in your debt Shelley. ;D

I know now Raymond is the Euclid I've been searching for.

His marriage to Mable Irene Bissett in May 1935 was a short one.  She died in 1941 in Las Vegas.  Haven't found any other marriages for him until Aug 1972, where he marries Joanne C. Doll then they promptly divorce in Dec 1972. :o

I would have thought that this was Mabel's death:

California Death Index

Name:   Mabel B Deforest
Birth Date:   25 May 1915 Canada
Death Date:   18 Dec 1971 Los Angeles

Could be waay off,though!

Maureen, your suggestion is looking to be the correct one.

Today I came across this: http://law.justia.com/cases/vermont/supreme-court/1952/222.html

No wonder I've been having problems finding him.

Wow,Jules-

That IS interesting! Well done for a great find. :)

Must admit I've not read through the entire case (and probably won't until Tuesday or Wed.).

Just something about arson and cooking Thanksgiving dinner.... ;)

Best,
Maureen
