Title: stockton-on-tees burial - help please
Post by: jsm on Monday 25 January 16 17:23 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I have just found a newspaper article about one of my relatives in Yorkshire who was attending a family funeral in Stockton on Tees on July 8th 1927, when her husband died back home in Yorkshire.  I am of course, now curious as to who might have been buried in Stockton on that day.  (possible surnames could be Hoyle, Law, Adkins, Bedford)  Can anyone help please?

Thanks very much,
jsm

Checking FreeBMD, the only likely candidates are:

George Bedford, age 67, in Sedgefield Registration District
Gladys Bedford, age 36, in Sunderland RD
George Hoyle, age 51, in Stockton RD
Benjamin Law, 81, Durham RD
Elizabeth Law, 65, Darlington RD

George Hoyle was buried 14th August 1927 according to Stockton Roots   :(

Thank you so much both of you.  (i was rather hoping for George Hoyle as I'd found him on the freebmd site - but obviously not, he's buried far too late!)  The Laws and Bedfords were a bit of a long shot.  Doesn't seem like any of them either.

So - who could have been buried on or shortly after the 8th July???  Do you have access to burial records?

Thanks again,
jsm

Do you have access to burial records?

I just searched the surnames you gave on Stockton Roots.
However, I don't think they yet have full coverage of all burial records  :-\

Have you approached it in a different way - eg have you traced all her siblings and found out when they and their spouses died?

There is a Probate entry for a Charles Adkins that died 8th July 1927 - but that was in Yorkshire

Also for an Emma LAw died that day, but that was also in Yorkshire

What was the name of your relative as there may be a report in a local newspaper which would help.

Stockton Registration District also covered parishes in North Riding of Yorkshire?

Also, a burial needn't take place where the person actually died.
And a Death Registration has to take place in the Registration District where the death occurs.

OK - what i know so far is (and this is from a newspaper article that i found on findmypast's collection)

Charles Adkins collapsed and died at Wath Main pit on July 8th 1927.  His wife Naomi Adkins (nee Law) was attending a "family funeral" in Stockton on Tees at the time. So i was curious as to whose funeral it might have been.  (i'd wondered about Hoyle when i found the name on freebmd, as there are a lot of links with that family.  it cannot be though)

So - starting with the closest family - when did Naomi Adkins parents die? Presumably they would be Law, so looking at KGarrad's list, were they Benjamin or Elizabeth?

Next - did she have siblings? If so, what names for brothers and their wives, and also for sisters and their married names (are sisters married names amongst the list you gave?)

1881

Petty Shop, Albion Place, Brampton Bierlow, Yorkshire

Charles Law 45 coal miner bn Attercliffe
Elizabeth 40 bn Thurns....
Elizabeth 18
Naomi 15
Mary 13
Joseph 11
? 9
Mercy 7
Lily 3
Ethel 1
Ophelia 1 mth

so she had plenty of rellies that may have died!

Looks as if it wasn't her parents though.  Nor can I see a death for Ophelia anything in 1927in Stockton on Tees

You are trying so hard!  Thank you.  That is indeed her family - i have evidence of all their deaths/burials or proof that they were still alive in 1927 - except for her sister Mary (born 1868) who married Thomas Mills (born 1862)  I lost track of them after the 1891 census.  There is no Mills death for 1927 registered in the Stockton area though.

If you contact Bereavement Sevices at Stockton Council , telling them your 'predicament' , and giving them all the possible names , i'm sure they'd be able to let you know who was buried in any of their Cemeteries on that date.
