Can anybody tell me how to get further with the following information please. (my husband's mother)
Margaret Fleming born 12 Sept 1916.at Andorslough Glennamaddy ,Galway
Parents Thomas Fleming Land holder and Ellen Raftery. Birth cert issued in 1936 before she came to England.
I have checked the 1911 census and couldn't find Thomas and Ellen.
I then looked for a marriage registration (1885 to 1916) but can only find a Patrick Fleming / Honoria Raftery marriage 1905 Castlereagh. I can't find this couple on 1911 census.
So as the parents are Catholic was it compulsory to register the marriage?
There were several brothers and sisters but I have no idea when and what order they were born . At least one of Margarets brothers ,Martin stayed in Glennamaddy.
Any suggestions welcome. Sue

Registration of non-Catholic marriages started in 1845 and of Catholic marriages from 1864.
Lots of Flem(m)ings in Glenamaddy D.E.D. in 1911 including several named Thomas- perhaps he and Ellen were married after the census. It's also possible they married outside Ireland and were living elsewhere before daughter was born in 1916.
In 1911 there's only one household listed under Ardislough, Glenamaddy D.E.D., Galway.

Thanks for that. Perhaps where they lived in 1916 and subsequently. That is how my husband says it is spelt ,different from her birth cert.
I have looked at all the Fleming families in 1911 in the area and seen the Thomas's,it's the lack of an apparent marriage that is puzzling. I haven't found one in England either.
Is it likely that Catholics use a baptismal name rather than a given name like they do in some European countries ? Just a question as I know it won't get me any further at the moment. Sue

Since you have Margaret's birth certificate, recheck the details given- is the father's address different?
Do you know the names of the siblings? that may help locate details of the family

Hi .
The only address given is Ardislogh ,Glennamaddy.
Apparently the Keaveney's lived 2 farms away, about half a mile away. The Flemings lived next door to the Egans.
The household you found has jogged my husbands memory. He used to go as a child in the 50s.
Brothers and sisters he remembers Mary , Martin and Patrick but there were probably more and of course he doesn't know if they were older or younger. Sue

Further to my original post.
Thomas Fleming 29,is on the 1911 Census ,Barna , Glenammady, with his mother Mary, brother Martin and and his first wife Kate.
I believe this is Kate O'Brien who he had been married to for less than 1 year.
They have 2 children Bridget Dec 1911 and Mary Aug 1913. Kate died Jan /Mar 1915.
Thomas then married Ellen Raftery in 1915 or 16.
Margaret Fleming was their first child.
Thomas is probably the son of Anthony Fleming and Mary Mitchell.
Ellen is probably the daughter of John Raftery and Bridget Hussy? of Kilkerran BUT I can't find a marriage to confirm it.
Sue.
