Would someone please give me an idea of the conditions on the 3 mast full rigged ship in 1881 taking 3 months to travel to Qld.
I presume there would have been casualties due to the heat In Dec-Mar. Not sure how many passengers the ships would have carried.
Any help appreciated,
Annette

Hi Annette,
Any particular ship you are looking at.
Gerry

Gerry, the ship is The Duke Of Athole which sailed from Glasgow 18.12.1881 and arrived in Moreton Bay 16.3.1882.
Unfortunately I do not know why they came out - not for gold I do not think.
The sad part is my grandson is asking lots of questions for a project and I am feeling very stupid.
The conditions on the ship and the hardships are his query. With a one year old child I should imagine it was difficult.
Many thanks fore your reply.

Hi Annette,
Sorry, you named the vessel in your first post.
From the Qld State Archives, for that voyage there were.
1 x full paying passenger.
231 free passengers.
49 assisted passengers.
30 remittance passengers.
3 x births on board
5 x deaths on board.
total souls landed, 309.

Gerry you are amazing!!!!!!
Very interesting statistics.
Ros, I look forward to any info.
I have found a picture of the Ship and she looks pretty good. Although it would be a painting and hence the nice appearance.
The route back then would have been south of Africa and the poor ships would have been battered.
Unfortunately I have no convict in the family for my grandson, we are oh so ordinary and a 3 month sail was the best I could come up with.
Many thanks,
Annette

Do web search to find -
...The Duke of Atholl, in 1878, was the first sailing ship towed through the Suez Canal...sold to Devitt and Moore in 1880...sold on again 1889......
-
Thankyou to all of you. The Suez Canal information was most interesting.

Just for interest the 3 children born on board had the middle name as ATHOLE or ATHOL after the name of the vessel.
Robert Athol Smart, born 25th March 1882, registered in Qld.
Wm (William) Athole King, born 24th March 1882, birth registered in Qld.
John Athole Robertson, cant find a Qld birth registration.
The 5 deaths on board were infants.

Gerry I do not know how you do it.

Whoops sorry :( Thanks Debra :)

Yes Debra you have the right one.
It took some finding but my family - Sinclairs, had been listed as "Similar". It shows the 3 names, Robert, Eliza and Mary.
This is on the index of Immigrant Ship's Arrivals 1848-1912.
Thanks again,
Annette

The 'Kalara' moved the passengers up the Brisbane River from the Duke of Athole which was at anchor in Moreton Bay on the evening of 27th March 1882 to the Immigration Centre.

R.L.Stevenson's "An Amateur Emigrant", gives an excellent insight into life aboard an emigrant ship of the period, although sailing from the Clyde to New York & not Australia, Stevenson made the voyage himself & relates his experiences. Available online.

My great-grandmother sailed from Glascow to Brisbane on this ship. They sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and didn't stop. The ship also docked in Sydney before proceeding to Brisbane. I believe this was the only voyage the ship made to Australia from the UK.
-
Caty, many thanks for the interesting information.
I will have to get back to my Sinclairs again - where has all the time gone?
Take care, Anne
