..... granddad on the right always wore suit even when gardening!
Jane
Is it beside the seaside?
Is that a fountain ?
I think seaside as well. That pattern on the post behind your grandmother is repeated on the wall. Were your grandparents great travellers Jane, or it likely to be South Coast of England?
No help but Jane I do like your Gran's Style!
Jen
Let me just mention Bournemouth, at random really.
But your grandparents may have liked its style and cleanliness and temperature in the summer.
Good clue Ruskie
Does it make it Hastings Pier then?
The decoration has an art deco look/feel about it.
What are the things at the top of the photo? Are they something hanging down from the top of the pillar. or is that pillar holding something up?

I thought lights?

Of course, yes, it must be! That should help in the search as the lights must be fairly big.
I have just googled art deco pier but haven't seen anything likely. Possibly wrong search terms - perhaps it is not a pier ....
I have another pic, but I am thinking it is too easy. Not for me though ::) I would guess at late 40's early 50's. I had a few ideas where it might be. I have googled but not come up with anything. My grandmother was a great one for hats , granddad on the right always wore suit even when gardening! Assume man on left is friend maybe his wife was talking picture.
I have a feeling this will be over quickly. But I would be interested in finding out where it was taken.
Jane
If it's a pier that will eliminate a lot of seaside towns.
The men may be wearing poppies, which along with the black may indicate its Remembrance Day. Could they be standing in front of a war memorial with no name plaques in the shot? Or maybe the nearby building on the right is part of a memorial?
Also, do the shadows give any clues, I make it that they're facing south into the sun at around midday? If it is a pier, is the sea to the left of the photo, therefore they're on a west-facing coast?
just a couple of thoughts
There is a very impressive War Memorial in Bournemouth Central Gardens,
Google it for more photos and press reports.

Very different.
Funny how we see things Groom ;D - I thought the couple were stood on a street with some railway thing going on behind them...
Just had another thought, could they be on a bridge?
So it looks as if could have been taken by one of those professional beach photographers rather than just being a casual snap and possibly Margate area. Back to Googlemaps.

I think this has everyone stumped.
Herne Bay Pier?
Look here https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4b/3rd_Herne_Bay_Pier_1932-1939_013.jpg
Compare the dome in background, the "art Deco" monument, the decoration on the entrance at the back....
Let's see if I can find you something harder ;D

Jane, if you have another mystery photo there is no reason why you shouldn't post it. We all enjoy being Rootschat detectives and there is nothing to stop other people posting their photos too. I look forward to seeing the next one, whoever posts it.

Oh. Ok no more from me. I understand what you mean. This seems one sided. I am not giving anything back. I just thought people enjoyed doing this. I wasn't desperate to know where photo was taken. Just a bit of fun.
I have helped someone today by 're uniting one of my cartes de visites with its rightful owner. Through a lot of research on my part and was able to pass on to them together with the picture.
Sorry guys :'(
I think these "where am I" challenges are great fun!

There's no reason why Jane can't post another one of her great pictures AND, but only if she wants to, help someone else with one of theirs.
Please BumbleB, don't speak for all of us - I've had great fun with Jane's pictures (particularly the War Office roof one), and would love more.
If you don't want to join in BumbleB, then you don't have to.
