Title: Where are my Grandparents
Post by: jettejjane on Thursday 10 March 16 16:21 GMT (UK)
I have another pic, but I am thinking it is too easy.  Not for me though ::) I would guess at late 40's early 50's.  I had a  few ideas where it might be. I have googled but  not come up with anything.  My grandmother was a great one for hats , granddad on the right always wore  suit even when gardening! Assume man on left is friend maybe his wife was talking picture.

I have a feeling this will be over quickly. But I would be interested in finding out where it was taken.

Nothing to do with your photograph or where it was taken  ;)

I have a photograph of my grandfather, sitting on the beach (on the sand, not even a deckchair), and he is wearing - suit, tie, waistcoat, shoes, socks and his watchchain!  The only item missing is his trilby  ;D ;D

The thing behind nana`s head,? Looks like one of those Easter Island statues but only because you can't see all of it and I have vivid imagination.

I think seaside as well. That pattern on the post behind your grandmother is repeated on the wall. Were your grandparents great travellers Jane, or it likely to be South Coast of England?

Jen, yes I don't think I have one photo without a hat on!! Makes her look old before her time. She was a lovely lady, but so old fashioned. Died when I was 8, but remember her so well. Spent a lot of time with my Nana Maggie loved her too bits.

Let me just mention Bournemouth, at random really.
But your grandparents may have liked its style and cleanliness and temperature in the summer.

To the right of grandad through the window could that be a lifeboat station? Hubby mentioned it.

That could be the gates and arch at the entrance to the pier just behind them.
Title: Re: Where are my Grandparents
Post by: groom on Thursday 10 March 16 20:26 GMT (UK)
Wonder if that's a lamp post behind them, with two lamps, the sort you find along the sea front, possibly a shelter to the right?
Title: Re: Where are my Grandparents
Post by: jettejjane on Thursday 10 March 16 20:41 GMT (UK)
Yes, I think it is seaside and a pier. But where. My money is on South coast. Let you into secret, family.from West Sussex stones throw from Littlehampton. My original guess was Brighton or Southsea. Having googled can't see any similarities. Somewhere closer may be? There is plenty of scope.

Title: Re: Where are my Grandparents
Post by: groom on Thursday 10 March 16 21:04 GMT (UK)
I think that pattern on the stand and wall will be a clue. Doesn't "feel" like Brighton to me. If that is a pier behind them, the photo would have to have been taken from the east side of the pier, and there's no sea wall there. In fact looking on Google maps, I can't find any south coast towns that actually have a proper sea wall.

Post by: DavidG02 on Thursday 10 March 16 21:12 GMT (UK)
I have a sense the walkway/pier is circular. From the column around to the right under the arch then down to the ( agreed) lifeboat station/observation tower.

The decoration has an art deco look/feel about it.

What are the things at the top of the photo? Are they something hanging down from the top of the pillar. or is that pillar holding something up?

Guys, thanks. I know south coast but just can't place it. The wall and the thing behind nana.

David do you think it is lifeboat station?

I thought this was an easy one. Not for me I hastent to add. Picture has always intrigued me. Lo

Of course, yes, it must be! That should help in the search as the lights must be fairly big.

I have just googled art deco pier but haven't seen anything likely. Possibly wrong search terms - perhaps it is not a pier ....

If it's a pier that will eliminate a lot of seaside towns.

The men may be wearing poppies, which along with the black may indicate its Remembrance Day. Could they be standing in front of a war memorial with no name plaques in the shot? Or maybe the nearby building on the right is part of a memorial?

Also, do the shadows give any clues, I make it that they're facing south into the sun at around midday? If it is a pier, is the sea to the left of the photo, therefore they're on a west-facing coast?

just a couple of thoughts

Stonework design on the pillar matches that on the right hand side of the wall.

The colour tones on the tower have a seaside feel.  If not the entrance to a pier, could it be the entrance to a funfair?

Matthew, thanks. I did wonder if men were wearing poppies or some sort of badge.and I too did briefly think war memorial. If I knew who other m an was that might help.

I still think building to right of nana is pier like.

My initial reaction when I saw the photo was that they were near a train station. I thought the building to the right was where a train stood or passed through and the wall they were stood in front of dropped down to the tracks...

That's the one I found, yes nothing like.  I cant get link to work either.

I don't think a war memorial would have a wall around it either.  It doesn't look like a war memorial to me.

Jen,  yes I see why you are thinking that.  The more I look the more I think, yes could be.

I still think  the building in the centre between grandparents  looks like the entrance to a pier.

Looks too open to me to be a railway station, plus the photographer would be standing on the edge of the platform.  ;D. I suppose you don't have anymore photos taken the same time do you, Jane?

Yes I can see that.

Jan,
We  have a breakthrough!   I have no more photos and this one was stuck in the album.  So with aid of a kettle of boiling water, in true spy fashion ;D, I removed it carefully. Could see in pencil some numbers and some very faint purple printing.  When I got out magnifying glass this is what I saw, (some of the album remained stuck to back of  photo).   To obtain further copies............ print with its number to, Golden Memories Ltd, Addiscombe Road, Margate.

However googled Margate can see any pics resembling this view  :'(
Title: Re: Where are my Grandparents

So it looks as if could have been taken by one of those professional beach photographers rather than just being a casual snap and possibly Margate area. Back to Googlemaps.

Yes it was quite a large photo, big bigger than the old box brownie used to give.

I am all googled out, looked at so  many pics of Margate, although just because photographer was based in  Margate doesn't necessarily mean that's where it is.

The photo survived the steaming but I wouldn't recommend it.  How I wish my grandparents had used photo corners.  Some pics do have them and also dates etc on the back.  But I don't think I will try unsticking  any more. Unless someone can come up with a better way.

I think this has everyone stumped.

I am so glad this has been solved! Well done greenrig! I feel as chuffed as if I'd found it myself.  ;) ;D

I think these "where am I" challenges are great fun! Caz posted dozens at one stage and although I was of limited assistance in the search for locations, I enjoyed following them, and there was a huge interest by rootschatters - one of the threads was over 60 pages - then continued to another 25 or so! (and frustratingly it remains unsolved) We love them!

Go for it Jane! Post more! You help plenty of people along the way and those who are not interested do not have to contribute to your photo ID threads.

I'm sure admin will tell you if you are overstepping the mark by posting too many photos (and I am sure that will never happen).  :)

Perhaps you assist people in other areas Jane.  ;)

Just because you are posting photos for identification does not mean you have to identify other people's photos.

Seems odd to expect you to do so.

This is surely why Rootschat is so popular and successful because people help out if and when they are able to, and if they can't, that is fine as well.  :)
