Isabel Mary Cole Hamilton born around 1860 at Gortin,[according to 1911 census at North Cray Kent]
Am interested to find out more about her life.
Isabel married Francis Richard Pease at St Peters Church of England Church,Eaton Square,Pimlico London 15 December 1885.
Death Salisbury 1941.
The Cole Hamilton family at Beltrim obviously has a long detailed history, not easy to unravel.
Would like to find out where this lady fits in,thanks Brionne.
-
Is this the lady's headstone? LINK (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=141764389&ref=acom)
as it states a birth-date of Aug 27 1860
There is reference here to Arthur Richard COLE-HAMILTON who died in WW1 - LINK (http://www.thestewartsinireland.ie/author/georgevstewart1/page/3/)
On the 1901 census Isabel states she was born in Beltrim Co. Tyrone and
as you said in 1911 in Gortin Co. Tyrone
which ties to Arthur's location and family
Who is named as her father on her marriage certificate as this could confirm or dent if she is a sister especially as this LINK (http://lordbelmontinnorthernireland.blogspot.ie/2013/07/beltrim-castle.html) refers to a sibling named Isabel Mary
The Wexford Independent has a Birth notice on Sept 05 1850 that reads
At Straree, near Gortin, the wife of Captain William Cole-Hamilton, late of 88th Connaught Rangers, of a daughter
Marriage reference UK St. George Hanover Square, London 1885 Q4 V1a P792
married St Peter, Eaton Square, Pimlico on Dec 15 1885
edited to add
various Dec 1885 newpapers reported on the marriage describing Isabel as the only daughter of the late Capt. Cole-Hamilton of Ballitore House, Co. Kildare
The Dublin Daily Express 19 December 1885 has a very detailed article describing fashion and gifts and attendees noting that the "bride was given away by Mr. A R Cole Hamilton" is in another article

My Luck, thank you so much for doing this research.Did find the Beltrim Castle information with its vast history.
The only birth had found for her so far was 27th August 1860 on burial headstone with her husband at North Cray,1941.
Will apply for the 1885 marriage certificate now.
Does not look as if she ever returned to Ireland to live after her marriage to well connected
Francis Richard Pease,at some point following his death in 1913 she purchased a small country house in south Wiltshire village at South Newton near Salisbury.
Hallmark, thanks,, Arthur Richard Cole Hamilton, Colonel H.M.Army is named as an executor in her husbands will, death 18 th Jan 1913,as now discovered this guy was killed on active service in Turkey.
You have both given me plenty to get on with ,Thank you.
-
I suggest you look at newspaper articles. They are on a paid site but one listed their wedding gifts and who gave what! I didn't read them all but they could hold more links such as naming siblings or other family member.
-
Thanks ,my luck,will do.
Have now found her as a child bridesmaid in a lavish,,double wedding,,on an island in Loch Erne, Fermanagh.
Belfast Morning News 2nd January 1871,followed by another at Glendermott Parish Church ten years later,22 December 1881.
Suspect will unearth a whole lot more, thanks for your interest. Brionne.

Hallmark,your research is quite amazing.
So have I got this correct,,,, Isabel Marys parents are in fact Captain William Claud Cole Hamilton and Caroline Elizabeth Josephine Stuart, youngest daughter of the Hon Andrew Stuart, marriage 10th June 1858.
There is no mention of this couple having a daughter circa 1860 but have I got this right.
-
I just know of the people you are looking for....
Actually googled the book and it is online here..
https://archive.org/details/genealogyfamily00edwigoog
Not being smart but one would get cross eyed trying to figure them out as some men took wife's Surname when marrying, Hamiltons married Hamiltons etc etc so sooner you than me!! :-))
-

Will apply for both a birth and marriage certificate next.
Need to have her origins straight before starting the next phase her daughter ,,,,Isabel Catherine Pease 1893.

As mentioned previously, with example, there are newspaper notices (on paid sites that announce a daughter's birth)
Warder and Dublin Weekly Mail 01 September 1860 reads
Hamilton - Aug. 27, at Straree, the wife of Captain William Cole-Hamilton Esq., late of 88th (Connaught Rangers), of a daughter
The Evening Freeman. 03 September 1860
August 27, at Straree, near Gortin, the wife of Captain William Cole-Hamilton, late of the 88th Connaught Rangers, of a daughter
The Tyrone Constitution of Nov 09 1860 states a number of people including Capt. Cole-Hamilton and his wife were "staying for a few days last week with Rev. S. and Mrs Alexander of Termon rectory" which may be where and when she was baptised; or at least a place to start looking
-
My luck,thanks again.
Sorry,my mistake. Isabel Mary Cole Hamiltons birth 27 August 1860,at Straree, near Gortin,as you have correctly found in both newspapers Warder and Dublin Weekly Mail,1st Sept 1860,and The Evening Freeman 3rd Sept 1860.
Confirms with an identical date of birth 1939 Register,Isabel M Pease 27 Aug 1860 widowed,private means,address,
Spexall South Newton Wilton Salisbury Wiltshire.
Thank you also for unearthing the snippet re where the family were staying 9th Nov 1860.
-
No problem - it may mean nothing but could prove useful ;)
-

Deebel,thanks for your input.
Original purpose was to accurately nail down the origins of Isabel Mary Cole Hamilton, born Straree, near Gortin, now confirmed as being on 27 August 1860.
As you will note from previous posts regarding this family, there are numerous members, many with similar names, with many variations. In fact most interesting crowd,so they all needed looking at.
Hallmark, yes, ministers appear frequently in this extensive family.
My Luck, found an ad in the Londonderry Sentinel dated 13 th July 1860,where Capt Cole Hamilton has stock of oak timber for sale, apply to Capt Cole Hamilton,Straree,Newtownsteward, Co Tyrone.
This only a few weeks before Isabel was born,so family living there.

Hallmark,many thanks indeed.
What an interesting extensive family, this has turned out to be.
Just one thing,as I do not know the area, forgive my ignorance, but would Straree, near Gortin be actually Beltrim or a different place, nearby.
ie,,,Belfast Morning News 31 August 1860, on 27 August at Straree near Gortin, the wife of Captain Cole Hamilton,a daughter.
Her baptism comes before 1864, so only available on paid site Roots Ireland would imagine.Have searched Co Tyrone especially Cappagh Church where the parents married 18 June 1858,but everything else on there excepting 1860.
As My Luck has said maybe November 1860 family staying at Termon Rectory with the Rev Alexander, maybe the answer.
-
The Cole-Hamilton baptisms are not on rootsireland which is not unusual for families of their stature.
They often had religious as relative and had private baptisms.
I am not personally familiar with this area of Tyrone but Straree seems to be an area or House in Gortin and the address used up to recently although I can't locate on a map! EXAMPLE (http://www.passedaway.com/notice/jean_mcfarland/585/)
McFarland is the names that pops up most associated bith Straree
Beltrim is the name of the Castle and Estate near Gortin - if you search on a map site you can see the area
-
Could be a "Baptised at Home" thing....
-
Thank you.My Luck and Hallmark,
Yes,baptised privately no doubt. Just wonder if there is a family archivist.
That just about rounds this one up,but will leave it open and enter the Baptism details when eventually found, many thanks for your continued interest, Brionne.

If you just Google them and look at Images you'll get plenty including Pease Pedigree

Thank you both so much.
As you may have gathered am a lady of a certain age, and self taught with lap top expertise.
You have given me plenty to get on with, good job the weather is awful. Brionne.
-
No problem... Go in Pease!!! :-))
-
This lady was my grandfather's first cousin.
I believe I have a photo, possibly two, in a family album.
but I'll have to scan them
-
most of the Cole-Hamilton children were baptized in the local church, St Patricks, Gortin.
http://cotyroneireland.com/churchrecord/lowerbadoney_baptism.html
but not all - and Isabel is one of them. If she was born elsewhere, that is probably why
-
these photos are from an album belonging to Caroline Cole-Hamilton, Isabel's mother.
The annotation is thought to be by one of Caroline's children (because reference to uncles and aunts match up that way)
-
Arthur and Isabel

Just one thing,as I do not know the area, forgive my ignorance, but would Straree, near Gortin be actually Beltrim or a different place, nearby.
Isabel's Grandfather Arthur Willoughby Cole-Hamilton was still alive, so he would have been living at Beltrim Castle. So I guess William and Caroline would have been living elsewhere, but I don't know Straree I'm afraid.
(except I found a modern Address of Straree at Buninver road Gortin - other end of the village)
-
jimbo09,Many thanks for your time and trouble with posting these photos and further information.
As you may have already gathered from this post,I was brought up in the same Wiltshire village where Isabel and also her daughter lived late 1930s /1940s.Have sent you a PM Regards Brionne.

Something went amiss with my reply yesterday, and my remarks never got posted.
I possess a copy of a book once owned by W. Cole Hamilton, Isabel's father, in which he (I assume) has written a list of roses, dated 1878. The book also bears the name "Ballitore", a village in County Kildare (but evidently simply meaning it was in his personal library in Ballitore). Checking online sources, William Claude Cole-Hamilton is often listed as residing in Ballitore House, and so it is possible that family baptisms also took place there. However, I am wondering if anyone has a photograph of William Claude Cole Hamilton (1833-1882) and/or his wife.
-
CAPTAIN WILLIAM CLAUD COLE-HAMILTON (1833-82), of Ballitore House, County Kildare, who wedded, in 1858, Caroline Elizabeth Josephine, daughter of Hon Andrew Godfrey Stewart, and granddaughter of Andrew Thomas, 1st Earl Castle Stewart; and dvp in 1882, having had, with other issue,
ARTHUR RICHARD, his heir;
William Andrew Thomas;
Claud George;
Isabel Mary.

They lived at Ballitore later I believe.
I have photos which I think are William Claude and Caroline Cole-Hamilton, from the same album mentioned above.
He is described as Capt W C-H and she as Mrs W C-H, the two photos are adjacent in the album.
