Title: Rowland Southwood
Post by: Salopian on Saturday 02 April 16 05:14 BST (UK)
I am trying to see what age Martha Rowland Southwood is from a marriage certificate.
I have a copy of the Marriage license, but unfortunately it doesn't say on there.
I am trying to work out if its the mother, or daughter, who married John Simmons at St Martin in the Fields,London Jan qtr 1853.
Martha's maiden name was Martha Rowland, b approx 1795, she married John Southwood in Bridgwater Somerset in 1827, he was sent to Tasmania as convict in 1832.
I know my next step would be to apply for the marriage certificate, but it is costly, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Andrea

The marriage licence states that Martha Rowlands Southwood is a spinster, so not likely to be the mother. (Possible death for mother Martha - Martha Southwood buried 16 Jan 1867, age 73, in St Kerrian Exeter)

Have you looked for John Simmons and Martha on 1861 census for their ages?

Mother and daughter are together in 1861 in St Kerrian Exeter, daughter Martha shown as unmarried! Martha (1833) appears to be with sister Mary Pearce in 1871 & 1881, shown as an imbecile from birth and still unmarried?

Ignore my previous posts - this Martha and Mary (st Kerrians Exeter)appear to be the daughters of Edward Southwood (cabinet maker) and Martha Symonds.

Sorry,

Jo  ???

Thank you...I did know that there was another Martha with the same daughters names but different husband, Edward...and duh of course she is a listed as a spinster...lol But interesting the the middle name is Rowland, her mothers maiden name.
I will see if I can get the certificate then in case its the one I'm after..
Cheers  :)

I have looked everywhere...the Martha in Devon isn't the same one, as her children are Edward, Mary and Martha...mine are all christened in St Marys Bridgwater and are Francis 1827/8 and Martha and Mary twins 1832. Father John Southwood and Martha Rowland were married there in 1827.
I have been looking for some time and cant find what happened apart from Francis and Martha living with the grandparents in Bridgwater in 1841, no sign of Mary....Francis, I know about his tree, but not the other children. Even their father disappeared in Tasmania in 1842 as he absconded...

A 19 year old Martha Southwood, born Bridgewater Somerset, working as a servant at Bristol Goal, in Bristol on the 1851 census.

I think the marriage certificate is the only answer, I can't see any sign of her anywhere as Simmons or Southwood in 61? Please let me know what the cert says when it arrives  :).
