I have been looking in to the Roe family from Oundle
They seem to have been involved with the national school as school mistresses
The names I have are Emma Kate Roe
And Ann Elizabeth Roe who went on to be head mistress at the Yardley Gobion school, retiring in 1926
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
Can you tell us exactly what type of information you are looking for and what you already have so we don't waste time duplicating.
No birthyears or birthplaces are mentioned in your post
Births March qtr 1864
Emma Kate Roe Oundle 3b 207
Where and when was Elizabeth born? The 1911 census will give you that information
1871/1881 info is free here

Sorry should have said
I have all the basic stuff from census materials
These two Roes are sisters Emma Kate born in Oundle
ELizabeth Ann born in Marylebone
They had a brother Harry Goodliffe (my great grand father) also born in Oundle - Havelock Cottages.
Their parents were Thomas Roe who died in the Northampton Lunatic Asylum and Mary Anne Honour
I believe Thomas Roe was the son of James Roe, but it's at this point I get a bit of a brick wall. THomas died in 1870, and I think is buried at St sepulchre's church in Northampton
The other Roes with the exception of Harry are possibly buried in Oundle, St Peter's?
I'm really after any corroborating information about any of these Roes. I seem to be the only person in the country researching them, as I haven't come across any others. I am hoping to visit Oundle this coming week to check grave yards. The whole family seem to have been involved in the national school in Oundle, again hoping for any corroborating info. I know this seems a little long winded but any help would be much appreciated. I have all the documents relating to the aforementioned Roes

Have you asked Northampton Record Office if they have logbooks, accounts books, etc, for the school for the period concerned ?
Durham University Library (a pleasure to visit) holds the National Society Annual Reports, 1812-1900, on fiche, which may include further details.
The Church of England Record Centre in London may also be useful.

Thanks for the advice
Hoping to pop into Northampton record office next week, whilst visiting Oundle
I think Durham may have to wait till half term or even summer
Once again thanks for the response

Hi
I see the surname is spelt as Rowe in 1871 but I am struggling to find the marriage between Mary Anne Honour and Thomas Rowe/Roe
A copy of that marriage cert would confirm if Thomas's father was James
-
Found it - she is spelt as Honnor. 15.12.1860
Thomas Roe was a baker and his father was James occ labourer
One of the witnesses was Edward Roe
-
Ann Elizabeth Roe was born 5.10.1861 and baptised 29.12.1861 at St Mary Bryanston Sq London.
She died 17.9.1942 at the Memorial Hosp Peterborough
Administration plus will to sister Emma Kate https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills
Emma Kate died 27.1.1944 - see probate entry on link above

Hi Carole
Thanks for your swift response
James was the father, and Edward was the witness according to the marriage certificate. I'm assuming that this was his brother - which matches with my research.
There seems to have been a lot of movement between Oundle and London and back again, with some of Thomas' brothers doing well for themselves as bakers then restauranters in and around Hanover square. I have a newspaper report that states Ann Elizabeth died as a result of a fall down stairs. Can only assume she was sort of well known to make the press. There seem to be a few James roe at this point and that's were my research becomes cloudy. That's what I would like to focus on next, trying to get a little further, as well as focusing on the education connection. I assumed (wrongly) that I was the first of my family to be involved in education. But it would seem not. If my research is correct, a big if. Then there was a Sarah roe who was also a teacher, who drowned herself in a fit of temporary insanity according to the coroners report. Education reform caused problems even in the nineteenth century

I can't find an 1861 entry for Thomas & Mary. His death reg shows he was 43 so b around 1827
Where was he born? There is no 1841/51 entry with a Northants birthplace
-
Is this Thomas's baptism?

And Edward

1841 for Oundle but no Thomas. So we are looking for a marriage between James and Ann at least before 1825 and a birth for James between 1787-1791
All b Northants
James Roe 50 publican
Ann 40
William 14
Charles 12
Edward 8
Sarah 7
Robert 5

That's where my brick wall kicks in
I have an 1851 census which has him as living in Oundle but not with the rest of the family, again assuming my research is correct. An apprentice baker.
1861 sees them living in London
Edward street and carburton street, in and around Marylebone which fits with other documents. Mary Anne honour or honnor or honor seems to have come from Lambeth. I'm intrigued why Thomas went to London - work I assume, but the family returns to Oundle - I'd love to know why. Sorry if I'm rambling - just pleased to get some positive response from this site which I was completely unaware of until today
-
The edward would match with the signature on the wedding certificate and James is listed as father on same document
James seems to shift from publican to labourer - assuming it's the same James and there seems to beacouple of potential Annes

Just seen your post about baptisms
Good question
Is Benefield near Oundle?
-
Is Benefield near Oundle?
Very much so, just a few miles.
... and this ...
James Roe of Upper Benefield bachelor = Ann Goodliffe otp spinster 1824 May 25 Oundle by licence
(Northants Marriage Index)
-
...
James Roe s/o Philip & Alice bpt 1801 May 24 Benefield CofE b.Feb 17
Ann Goodliff d/o William & Frances bpt 1796 Nov 28 Oundle CofE
(Northants Baptism Index)
Looks as if Philip Roe was married 3 times ... if you want them :D
-
Ann Goodliffe sounds promising and would possibly explain why my great grandad was named Harry Goodliffe roe.
May now have to re visit as the Ann I have being married to James is a different Anne
Thanks for the help

There is a brilliant Museum at Oundle http://www.oundlemuseum.org.uk/
who may be able to help as they have a lot of history about Oundle folk and there
are some books about Oundle which are brilliant for snippets of information also.

Many a time I have sat in the Library near where I live reading them. Oundle is not near me
but I love the town itself.

Have you asked Yardley Gobion History Group if they have any information about Miss Roe and YG school?
