Title: Death/Burial information sought for Lousia M. Summers between 1891-1901
Post by: Chrisinhouston on Sunday 10 April 16 14:48 BST (UK)
I would be so greatful if anyone could give me any help. I live in Houston, Texas and am filling in some blanks on my father's paternal side, surname is Summers.

My grandfather's uncle is listed in the 1881 Census along with his sister and mother in his household. That census is for the Civil Parish of Saint Woolos, Newport Monmouth and his occupation is listed as Clerk in Holy Gardens.
The names are James F. Summers (head), Louisa M. (mother) and Eva M. L. (sister). I tried researching where Holy Gardens is but can't seem to find any references to it, perhaps a church property that was sold or renamed.

On the next census of 1891 he is listed as residing at St. John the Baptist Vicarage in Newport and as a Priest in the Church of England. The Census record now has him and his sister but no longer the mother. Also listed are his wife, Ella M. Summers, mother in law, Louisa C. Child and 2 nephews and a nurse.

I am pretty sure his mother (my GG Grandmother) Louisa Margaret Summers must have died within that 10 year period and most likely buried in Newport. She was a widow and her other sons had all gone out to China to work in the Postal and Customs Services so I can't imagine her moving out on her own or going to live elsewhere.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry but I meant to say the 1891 and 1901 Census records.

Thanks, I should have done a better job of proofing before posting!

I have modified the subject and noted the correct Census years in my original post.

Thanks so much, I was not familiar with that website for wills and probate records. That's a great resource!

The probate record says she died at 90 Harley Street, Middlesex. Would that be in or near London? I found a 90 Harley Street in London but that is in Marylebone. Wikipedia says "Harley Street is a street in Marylebone, central London, which has been noted since the 19th century for its large number of private specialists in medicine and surgery". Perhaps she was there for medical reasons and died.

She did have one son who did not go to China but stayed in England. I didn't mention him in my original post as his mother is not listed in his home. He is William A. Summers and is in the 1891 Census in Kensington Civil Parish of London. Also listed at his residence is his wife, Evelyn R., daughter Marie R. and son, Edwin M. which was my grandfather. Also the mother in law, Harriot Bond.

Hi

Have you seen this report of James' marriage?
http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3733443/3733449/110/

Looks like he had a new parish and church to minister to
http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3469221/3469224/77/

and there was some discussion on rites and incense
http://newspapers.library.wales/view/4208400/4208402/11/

and his opinions on his wages in 1919!
http://newspapers.library.wales/view/4426992/4426993/14/

he is often referred to as J Frank Summers

As rosie99 has pointed out, 1891 Census states James' occupation is Clerk Holy Orders (not Gardens).
