Just testing, can't post in another topic :(
-
doing fine here!!
-
ninety per cent successful
-
Thanks, I've realised what it is now. Every time I tried to post my words disappeared, I realised it was the attachment that was too big but no idea why it didn't just tell me that instead of wiping out my words! ???
-
Annoying isn't it!! I've learnt to post the words then click modify to make the attachment - that way the words remain even if the attachment has to come off and be reattached in a smaller size! ;D ;D ;D
-
That's a good idea Wiggy, will bear it in mind for the future. :)
I ended up writing it in a Word document so I could copy and paste it each time. I don't recall this happening previously, I think there was a message saying that the attachment was too big.
-
It has been happening to me for a while, but I am sure it used not work that way . . . I'm sure the writing used to remain while you fixed the attachment - but something changed. :-\
-
Nope, nothing's changed as far as that is concerned.
If you post an image that is too big (more than 500kb) then you'll get the error message screen that says:
"An Error Has Occurred!
Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow."
If you press the "Back" button on your browser you'll see your original message.
Then go down to "Attach" and press "(Clear Attachment)"
This post should be on the "How to Use RootsChat" board, so I'll move it. :) I've changed the title too for others ot make it easier to find when they get the same message.

;D ;D
But . . . . . It doesn't Trystan! When we / I click 'back', I can go back, but though the writing might stay, I can't post again, without going right back to reply again and starting all over again . . . Unless I post the writing, then do the attachment afterwards.
It is something I am awake to now, but I used to be tearing my hair out wondering what I was doing incorrectly! ;D ;D
Maybe I am missing something - quite likely. ;)
-
Then go down to "Attach" and press "(Clear Attachment)"
I if you do this bit, (clear attachment) it should work. :)
-
Nope - it didn't work
I had typed 'I'm going to try it now with somethingI know is too big and see if it works . . .'
then when the photo wouldn't load I hit 'back', cleared attachment, then reloaded the now smaller photo . . but the screen in which I'd typed had frozen and the little working wheel wasn't going round.
So I had to go right back to start again at 'reply' to type this message.
I'm not trying to be difficult!! ;D
-
Wiggy,
That's strange, because I tested it before posting.
I typed some text. I attached an image that was 2 Mb. The error page came up. I pressed back. The messages was still there. Then I went down to Attachment and (Clear Attachment). Then pressed "Post"

Yes - the message is still there when you re-attach the photo - - - but the page is frozen and neither the message nor the photo will post.
It is strange . . . but I see that 'groom' has had the same problem (another thread running about not being able to post in the Common Room) and has got round it the way I do by posting the message first then going to modify to attach the photo so the message at least is posted.
I suspect others have the same problem as lots of people post their messages and then the photo appears a bit later. Don't know that, but suspect . . . . :)
Going to try again . . .
-
Can you give a link to that thread please so I can have a look?
What browser are you using?
-
No - didn't work again . . .
Here's the other thread.

I use Firefox - it is great I find! ;) Or Google - -not sure which name you want . . . . shows how much I know! ;)
-
Thanks, yes I'd already replied to that one. :)
If it helps I tested it on Google Chrome.
-
Well, I will just manage it with my Firefox, as I don't use Chrome. ;)
Odd though isn't it? :-\ ;)
-
Yes, it is strange. I've tried it now on Firefox and I get exactly what you're getting too!
I'll see if I can work out a way of fixing it somehow anyhow, although as it appears to be only in Firefox I'm going to struggle a bit :)
Trystan
-
Thanks Trystan - glad it isn't just me though! ;D. What a relief! ;)
And, if you can't fix it, well at least we can know how to manage it!! :)
-
Just testing in the browser called Opera (which I'm not so keen on). It works in that fine.
-
I was using Firefox too, so looks like that's the culprit. I'd tried the back button but the words had just disappeared.
-
So try posting the message, then go back and modify to post the photo . . . until Trystan works his magic!
-
I sorted it out thanks Wiggy, will bear it in mind if I need to post any other pics. :)
-
Just happened to me too, on Firefox. I was able to retrieve my message and copy but had to restart again. My fault to start with, in that I had one image too large ::)
Also having to become used to the reduced number of posts seen when using reply box, noticed it last week, just 3 earlier images showing now. Getting around that by viewing thread in another tab, quite often used the showing messages previously to refer to something in my post.
-
Reducing the number of previous posts shown was something I was experimenting with to see if it possibly solved the problem - but I'll increase that again now. :)

Thanks Trystan, I wondered if it may have just been a temporary adjustment, it's certainly helpful to have them showing further back for inserting a quote mid reply or just checking spelling of name or poster for eg, other than going straight to reply via quote within a posting ... cheers :) mare

Mare,
You're most welcome. It's good to hear that it's useful to see the older posts when replying too. Thanks for letting me know. :)
