Title: McAuley family from Leixlip
Post by: crinsy60 on Sunday 24 April 16 15:02 BST (UK)
I have been researching the McAuley family from Leixlip for quite a while and am looking for details about two daughters. The parents were Peter and Esther (nee Healey) born 1836 and 1843.
They had 9 children:-
John 1864, Margaret 1866, Owen 1868, Mary 1871, James 1873, Anne 1876, Catherine 1878, Jane 1881 and Elizabeth 1884.
I know that Jane emigrated to America and settled in Philadelphia but I'm interested in Anne and Catherine.
Has anyone any information about their married names or whether they had any children?

Many thanks

Hi,
I was just about to log off.

I found these
Church Baptism   McGauley   Eugene   1868   Co. Kildare
Church Baptism   Magauley   Mary   1871   Co. Kildare
Church Baptism   McGauley   James   1873   Co. Kildare
Church Baptism   Magauley   Esther   1874   Co. Kildare
Church Baptism   McGauley   Anne   1876   Co. Kildare

Eugene is known as Owen. Spellings are different but sound the same.
To find the marriages etc will take a bit of time.
I will be back on Wednesday I will see if I can find anything for you ok.

Esther McAuley is the person I'm trying to trace but I thought she was called Anne or Catherine since when I checked up on the baptism records in Church of Our Ladys Nativity they had no record of an Esther. Maggsie would you have any more details about her? Hallmark thanks for the parish links, I was able to find Peter and Esther's marriage record.
Thanks

Is this Owen in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kildare/Leixlip/Allenswood/1437593/
and John perhaps
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kildare/Leixlip/Leixlip/1437669/
Anne and Catherine were born in the late 70s so they won't have married in time for the NLI register images.
If I remember correctly RootsIreland doesn't go past 1900 but I think they are starting to extend that date.
So Civil Reg needs a look see

Thanks for all those links dathai. It does seem to be that Anne and Catherine are accounted for so that leaves the elusive Esther. I haven't been able to trace any marriage records for her but I'm sure she had at least one child. I may have to rely on contact from her relatives if there are any left in Leixlip.
Thanks

In 1911 mother Esther says she had 10 children,9 living could this death be the elusive Esther?

Christina living with her grandmother in 1911 could this be her birth
http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/24e40c1219936
mother McAuley, possible daughter for Esther!

Christina is the daughter of Owen McAuley and Mary Ryan but thanks for the thought. Earlier on in this thread Maggsie pointed out that the Esther I'm tracing was baptised in Leixlip in 1874 and that seems to be the only record of her. I don't know which of Esther senior's children died by 1911 but hopefully not Esther junior.

Christina McAuley mother Ryan born 1905
http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/5754550992194
Christina McAuley death 1905 age 0
http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/ed4ed613094906

But Owen does say in 1911 all 7 children are living.
But a child born in 1905 wouldn't be 8 in 1911, however a child born Dec 1902 would be.

All very confusing

Think that Esther 1874 is the 4th entry here, out of focus so not easy to read

Possibly Eugene 1868 http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/90/mode/1up 2nd from bottom
Mary 1871 http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/97/mode/1up 5th from top
Possibly James 1873 http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/110/mode/1up 4th from bottom
Ann 1876 http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/119/mode/1up
 3rd from the top

Peter and Esther married 24 Jan 1864(I think) http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633435#page/18/mode/1up
top of the page
son of ? and Margaret McGauly of Leixlip
daughter of John and Margaret  Haly of Leixlip
Witnesses John Hanlon and Essy Dalton
Michael Doyle CC
take the names with a pinch of salt the focus is terrible

James Dec 1864 http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/81/mode/1up 2nd from bottom
so if the James in 1873 is correct than this James would be the child who died.

Margaret Oct 1866 http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/86/mode/1up 4th from top

so that/s 7 children so far

Catherine 1878 http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/126/mode/1up 5th from top
Jane 1881 http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/133/mode/1up 2nd from bottom
1884 bottom of the page must be Elizabeth http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633434#page/143/mode/1up
That's 10 children.

Hi, I found a bit of time to do your search.
I have found a Peter (the Father) his birth.
Also 2 marriages.
A new list of the children. If you would like each baptism record please say and I will get them for you.
I can't find any marriage for Ann, Catherine or Elizabeth.

Did Esther and or James go to the USA as well?
I have just found something. 2 records of deaths, does the surname Hart mean anything to you?
I will send you a Private message as I need your email address to send the findings.
Maggsie

The Leixlip Register is very good in that it goes up to 1924, most stop at 1880, but the images are very poor, that said I can see Owen's children Catherine and Michael but can't see either Christina in between.

Yes Sinann that is the right Esther working in a hotel in Bray in 1911. I didn't know that her married sister Elizabeth was also living in Bray then so thanks for that Dathai.
Many thanks

a Peter Mcauley buried here 1958 age 63 born circa 1895 might be John's son

Hi,

I see this is an old thread but I’m wondering if anyone especially crinsy60 is about.

I have done a lot of research on this family and know know a considerable amount about them.

I was a friend of Laura Dunne born 1940, put into care about 1942 and late in life discovered she was actually Nora not Laura.

Laura was the child of Eileen Dunne (Born 1917 - not 1922 as claimed)
Eileen Elizabeth Dunne from Rathnew who used the made up name Helen and often used her second name Elizabeth as a first name.

Laura Dunne was born to Eileen in 1940.
Owen Mc Auley (Born 1909) married Eileen after the birth and Ive uncovered the went to America for 2 years. Laura was then put into an orphanage and never told who her father was.
Eileen changed many aspects of her life, changing her name around, and when other children were born she registered sone as McAuley and then included a C in other as Mc Cauley

There was also another mystery marriage in Letterkenny
The family left Lexlip in a hurry, even leaving some children behind at went to Birmingham.
Lots more stories.

Lauras husband approached me recently and asked me as a friend with a passing knowledge in this area to try to solve the mystery so he can just fulfil a promise to try and find out for Laura.

I have a massive family tree done and stories populated going back generations, so if I can help someone I will and equally if anyone know about the story which is almost 100 years old at this stage of who Lauras father was, John her husband would love to know.

Many Thanks
