Title: Has anyone seen this photograph
Post by: TinaRoyal on Wednesday 22 June 16 12:26 BST (UK)
This photograph was taken I think about 1897.  It is of Members of a Bowls Club in Rochdale.  I found the photograph amongst some old possessions of my late father, who said that his father, John Thomas Taylor, my Grandfather, was on the photograph, but I don’t know who it is.

Has anyone got a copy of the photograph and knows who anyone might be?  Also is anyone able to identify the Bowls Club, my Grandfather lived on Whitworth Road.

I have dated the photograph around 1897, based on other information I have.  Is this period correct, or should it be earlier or later?

Have you tried contacting Rochdale Veterans Bowling League
 (http://www.clmbl.co.uk/)

Maybe some old member might be able to help?

I would not have thought it so old had you not dated it, I would have thought about 1910 or 1920, but you have info to enable you to judge better then me.
Hope you get it sorted. Viktoria.

I'm not an expert on dating photos but thought it looked quite a bit later than 1897 also. Note gentleman on far left wearing what looks like a bow tie and one far right bottom row has what looks like a newer hat.

I'm sure the experts that read through posts on the dating board could help with all sorts of details  :)

Good morning,

I would say 1920s maybe even 30s. My maternal grandfather was wearing clothing like that in the 50s but he was a skinflint.

I notice half of these men wearing something on their Left hand lapel - could they be poppies ?...if so it would be after 1919 - can you take a closer look of the original and see if they are poppies ??
just a thought

Is the man in the back row 4th from the right a vicar, if so it could be a church club.

Thanks Jen.

Aghadowey suggested I posted the photograph on the Photograph Dating Board, which I did.

I would like to thank everyone for their help in trying to identify the date and the people on the photograph which included my Grandfather.

Thank you Mary, as you suggested, I have contacted the “Rochdale Veterans Bowling League”.  I have also contacted the Local Studies Centre at Touchstones in Rochdale, and the “Whitworth Historical Society”.

As aghadowey suggested, I posted the photograph on the “Dating Old Photographs” Board.  I am inclined to go along with Jim’s suggestion there, that the photograph was more likely to be taken in the 1920’s, as opposed to 1897.

Viktoria, the reason why I thought it dated back to 1897 was because on the back of the photograph was the address “171 Whitworth Road”.  1897 was the last year the Taylor family were living at that address.

Thank you all again for your help.
