Title: Missing Will? - Francis Hobson Potts, Barnsley
Post by: Rollinds on Sunday 10 July 16 14:25 BST (UK)
Hello

I have a Francis Hobson Potts, born 1810 Barnsley, Cordwainer who died 1892 Dec qtr Barnsley aged 82.  He had lived and worked all his life in the Barnsley area and appeared to own one or more properties.

I have not been able to trace a Will or Letter of Administration for him and wondered if I can not see the wood for the trees, or there was no will.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks
Rosalind

Hi Rosalind

I checked the calendar by name searching at Ancestry but then also followed it up with a 5 years manual search on the HMCTS site just in case Ancestry made a mistake with his name.

There isn't an obvious record.

So he may have left a will of such little value it could be sorted out without going to the probate courts.

If you had an exact date of death you could use that to do a death date search on Ancestry.

Also check the local papers to see if his death was reported as a news item in addition to a family placed death notice.

A later edition of the paper might show what happened to his estate if he was considered to be a person of some note within his community.

No entry for Francis, so far, in the newspapers, but:

Leeds Times, 1 June 1861 - death Barnsley - yesterday (Friday), aged 51, Mary wife of Francis Hobson Potts, shoemaker of Pinfold Street.

And there must be another FHP  :-\

Sheffield Independent, 8 November 1886 - Francis Hobson Potts, a youth of Thomas Street was injured by a fall of paper bales in Barnsley.

Thank you both for your kind replies. I suspected there was no Will but I know you are all very knowledgeable on here and I am always willing to learn.

There is another FHP he is the grandson of Francis died 1892

Thanks again.

Hello Rosalind and All

Have you tried a Probate in his wife's name?

I came across an 1857 Admin, for someone who died about 30 years before. When I read the Admin, it said that the person who should have applied for Admin, had not, but since died and now Admin was being applied for.

I have also seen a Yorkshire Admin in the wife's name who died first in January 1823, but was never dealt with until 1831 (after her husband died in October 1829).

Kind regards Mark

Hi Rosalind
Francis Hobson Potts was my Great Grandfather.
There is quite a bit of research about him on my tree on Ancestry.
Get in touch if you want to discuss findings.
