Hi Gang
(THIS LOOK UP HAS BEEN DONE FOR ME BY A KIND MEMBER OF ROOTSCHAT)
some years ago my late father said to me Auntie Nelly used to be Elgar's housekeeper but I didn't pay much attention then & wish to god I had - I wonder if anyone is able to help me as I found on Ancestry 1911 summary books that Plas Gwyn, Hampton Park Road, Ipsley, HEF is listed as being owned by Sir E. Elgar & it just says that 4 females were in the house at the time(I gather this would be 4 servants as Elgar was in Toronto when the 1911 census was taken). I would love to know the names of those 4 females residing at Plas Gwyn in 1911 as one of them may have been an ancestor of mine - her surname may have been Lowe as that was the maiden name of my fathers mother who was born Staunton-on-Arrow
I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this request & would be very grateful if anyone is able to help me
All my very best wishes to my fellow members on this valuable site

Sorry, we are not allowed to do look-ups for 1911 census. :'( Suggest you visit your library, which may have access to Ancestry and/or FindMyPast.
-
Have you tried searching the 1911 for the surname Elgar in that vicinity :-\
-
Hi Bumble
Thanks for your reply but I was unaware of that restriction on look ups & I'm a library volunteer researcher at Weston & we do look ups for the public every week using the 1911 census. Ive tried Ancestry but its a waste of time & I was hoping for some local information about the parish of Ipsley HEF which may have helped me locate the names of the 4 females in Elgar's house on the 1911 cen summary books
All the very best

Hi Rosie
As I said in my request Elgar was in Toronto when the 1911 census was taken & all I can find is the name of the house he owned at the time its name & location also that there were 4 females in the house on census night.
Thanks a lot for trying
All the very best

What am I missing!! If you are doing 1911 look ups regularly at your local library, why cant you look at the entry you are wanting the details of?
-
You might be better off finding out a bit more about Auntie Nelly first - date / place of birth, confirm surname. Sometimes housekeepers were of mature years and widows. Did Auntie Nelly marry?
-
1901 census has a Helena Lowe b abt 1879 at Staunton on Arrow occ Housemaid, but living with her widowed mother and siblings at S on A, so she's not a live in servant.
-
If Helena is Aunty Nelly, you can discover roughly where she was in 1911 on Familysearch.
-
If you have found the entry for Plas Gwyn in the Summary books, then you should also have an "occupier" to work with, to search for the names of those people in the house.
I'm also a little confused that you have entered your query under Hertfordshire, but refer to Herefordshire. :-\ And the only Ipsley I can find on the 1911 census is Upper Ipsley in Warwickshire. But then I'm easily confused at times ;D
-
A search in the 1911 shows that person working for a Sir Edward, but not Elgar. ;)

Not just you - I found the same! And I couldn't find an entry in the summary books for Hampton Park Rd in any place!
Anyway, as has been said, Helena can be found in 1911 so the OP can look at that complete entry when he is next at the library, and hopefully it will help move his research on.

Sir Edward Elgar only owned Plas Gwyn from 1904 to 1911 then moved to London and Sussex. He came back to Worcestershire in 1923 three years after his wife died. If Nelly was his housekeeper, it could have been in that period.

I did not suggest that you looked up Edward Elgar, just the surname of Elgar in Herefordshire. ;)

It is not ipsley, but Tupsley, a district within Hereford city outskirts.

Hi there
This may answer a few questions - Firstly I clicked on Hertfordshire by mistake as the look up request was intended for Herefordshire pages.
I only have access to Ancestry library edition when working as a volunteer researcher so can't do an address search.
Putting Ipsley down was my error as I misread the photo on my mobile phone camera of the summary book page entry for Plas Gwyn
The summary book entry does not show the occupier only the owner of the property & how many people were in the property on census night
Rosie, I'm sorry but I was In a hurry when I saw your reply & didn't read it properly
As for when Elgar owned Plas Gwyn 1 JUL 1904 to 31 DEC 1911 according to the official web site

Is this your Auntie Nelly?
-
Hang on I use Ancestry Library edition regularly and I can see full census entries, unless something has changed since June when I last used it.
-
I've sent phil a pm which I hope might help him
