Title: St Peters, Croft on Tees burial lookup 1843
Post by: broadysword on Thursday 24 November 16 19:56 GMT (UK)
Calling budding genealogy sleuths. I am after the burial details of a Richard Harland who died October 31, 1843. He lived in the village of Croft at time of death. My searches through the parish records for the area surrounding Croft yielded nothing. Unfortunately records for St Peters in Croft On Tees 1843 are not available online, unless someone knows where. I contacted the vicar whose parish covers St Peters concerning my enquiry but alas nothing was replied back. So I am looking for someone who is visiting the North Yorks County Record Office if they could do a lookup for me. I would be extremely grateful.

I live about 5 mins drive from the church and would be happy to look in the churchyard for any gravestone or memorial for you or make enquiries at the church.

Hi Greenvale. Wow that is so kind of you. I do know that the church has copies of the original transcripts but they never got back to me. Cant be precise that Richard Harland is there or even if he had a headstone, but fingers crossed. Thank you so much.

I would be glad to help. Unfortunately it will be sometime next week before I can get there but I'll do it as soon as time allows.

The records for St.Peter's are available on Find My Past. Richard Harland, age 75, was buried 2 Nov 1843, his abode is given as Dalton. His surname has been transcribed as Ruland due to an ink smudge in the original image.

Well done Angelfish. I'll still try and visit and see if there's a headstone or grave marker.

To everyone who has shown an interest in my post I would like to say a huge thankyou. Just goes to show what a great site this is.
Now getting back to Richard Harland. I laughed and cried when I read the post from Angelfish. I laughed because I have a full worldwide subscription to Find My Past and for years I never solved this mystery of where he could have been buried despite searching this site for any clues. Perhaps I placed too much emphasis on the surname Harland.
I have now viewed the original entry and I can see how FindMyPast have misspelled the surname. I have his death certificate and it notes his death was Pepper Field House Croft, so when I saw Dalton which I believe is a mile south of Croft I was surprised.
I cried because I have been searching for this information for many years without success and now I am retired I never thought I would solve this puzzle even though I am also a member of Ancestry worldwide and a host of other fh sites. Cannot thank you enough.

Glad to help, I have a number of relatively unusual surnames in my tree so am used to them being mistranscribed, it makes you quite creative in your searches  ;D

Just as an after thought, there's a farm shop at Pepperfield farm, Dalton on Tees, there could be a connection with  Pepper Field House.

Actually Pepperfield Farm and Pepper Field House Dalton I would say are the same building. Cannot find any photographs of the actual farmhouse as yet only the letting buildings on the land.

Thanks very much. I did find a photograph of the main farmhouse building which I have saved from the farm website. The house itself dates from around 1800.
Your interest in my post was very much appreciated.
Andrew.
