I am trying to find a birth and marriage record for Henry Honeyborne (my 4x great grandfather) born around 1748.
Henry was married to Martha, all their children were born in Thornbury Gloucestershire, Henry and Martha both died in Thornbury but I cannot find a birth record for Henry.
Looking through parish records for Thornbury I haven't found (so far) any entries for the name Honeyborne before Henry and Martha's first child was born so I think the family must have come from somewhere else.
If anyone can help be past this block I would really appreciate it.

Familysearch has a marriage of henry honyborn to martha Arnold in 1782 in Bromyard Herefordshire,
The date is a good fit with the first child.

Jebber - I did go on the trail of the Dorset Honeybornes some time ago but haven't managed to connect them to my lot despite a lot of similar names! The Henery you mention married and died in Dorset so it can't be him.
Capetown - Thornbury roots has been a great help to me in my research, Henry was the father of the John you mention but as he didn't survive to the first census I'm not sure what his occupation was. Thornbury roots doesn't mention any Honeybornes as far back as the Henry I'm looking for apart from the family gravestone. I went to Thornbury last year and the church records don't have any more info about him unfortunately.
mazi (Mike) - I did find the marriage record that you mention and as you say the dates fit in nicely but I haven't been able to prove it. I phoned the Herefordshire history society but the original parish record has almost no information, just the name of the bride and "of this parish", the name of the groom and the names of the witnesses - no fathers names or addresses :-\
I traced a Martha Arnold to a family in Rockhampton which is very close to Thornbury so she does seem a strong possibility but I don't know what she'd be doing in Bromyard (it's quite a way from Thornbury for those times). Also I still have no clue as to where Henry came from and why he might be in Bromyard.

This tells us that Henry and marthas child Elizabeth was bap. 6 months after her birth.
It does not specifically say she was born there.

Could search for Thornbury,
follow down the list until you reach : tithing of Morton - and see if the family are listed as tenants etc.
Have found some of my Ancestors this way.

Mike - good point, Elizabeth could easily have been born elsewhere though I haven't found a birth record for her anywhere yet. Because Elizabeth was born so soon after the Bromyard marriage record, I had an idea that maybe Martha was pregnant and thus left home and went to Bromyard - I still can't work out where Henry came from though.
Capetown - Thank you for the pointers on Ancestry Land Tax records - I didn't know about them, I have spent hours on various records (I'm supposed to be working, it's a good job I'm the boss!) I've found some really interesting stuff but unfortunately still can't find any Gloucestershire records prior to 1782. I'm more convinced that the Honeybornes came from elsewhere but the only record I have for Henry around the correct birth date is the Dorset one and I know it's not him. Also you referred to John as being a Mason, do you think he was a Freemason? I've got in my head that he was a stone mason but maybe I assumed that .... Do you know if there are any specific masonic records that might help?
I'm doing as much as I can just now because my Ancestry subscription runs out soon, I won't renew for a while because work starts to get busy again in the next couple of weeks. I know there are loads of record collections that I'm just not aware of so I waste a lot of time searching.

My thought was that Martha was living in Bromyard, possibly in service,married there, and went home to mum and dad after the birth, along with Henry.
Before civil reg. in 1837 the christening is often the only record of a birth, 6 months afterwards is slightly unusual.

Pure speculation, but Bromyard is close to the border with Worcestershire, there are a lot of Honeybourne births there in the 1700s,

Which gives: Master's name/Apprentice Name etc
There are a few HONEYBORN
including
Josiah HONEYBORN 1747 Apprentice to Master : Will EMMERSON, Birmingham
Josiah HONEYBORN 1774 Apprentice to master : Jno MANSELL, Birmingham
etc etc
One branch of my family where Carpenters and also found them on in the above records.

You have the names of the witnesses ...... ? who where they....
? people they knew and worked with or Parish Clerks.
With a bit of delving sometimes clues are there.
Family names are also a very important link between generations.

Mike - Yes I did start trawling through Worcestershire records but got a bit overwhelmed by which ones to try to follow! I haven't found a Henry whose dates match mine though ... I assume that the family name came from there originally as there is a village in Worcestershire called Honeybourne (or maybe it was named after us!). I'm still puzzled about what would take Martha from Thornbury to Bromyard unless she had relatives there however I can't find any other Arnolds in Bromyard (her mother's side perhaps ...). Funnily enough I went to school in Bromyard (lots of strange coincidences in genealogy!) it's a very small place so unless it has changed a lot since the 1700's I don't suppose Martha would have gone that far to work.
Capetown - Ancestry is free at my library too but you are limited to an hour at a time and as I work it's not easy to plan ahead, I tend to do bits of research on a whim usually late in the evening!
Annoyingly I can't put my hand on the notes I wrote about Henry and Martha's marriage, I might phone the Herefordshire FHS and ask them again ....
The Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices is really interesting (so many records I don't know exist!) I've downloaded a few names that have tentative connections to a will that I found (don't know if that is connected to my family either .... )
