Hello, I'm looking for help to find the marriage partner of Maud Mary Gammon married according to freebmd in Mar. 1904 in Barnstaple.
I tried looking on there by a process of elimination for her husband but it'a an odd number of entries and she doesn't appear to be married to either of the two gentlemen on the page Davies or Potter according to the 1911 census.
She was born in 1883 in Georgeham Devon.
Where shall I look next ?

Strange - freebmd gives March 1904 Vol 5b Page 743
The entry on Family Search has a different reference
Maud Mary Gammon Marriage Registration Quarter Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration Year 1904
Registration District Barnstaple
Volume 5B
Page 1214
EDIT
It's 5B 743 on the GRO index

Thank You Carole, but does this get me any closer to finding the name of her husband short of ordering the certificate, which at the new price I'd rather not do.
Lesley
-
Using her christian names and birthyear/birthplace - you could check the 1911 for a match to find her husband then see if there is an entry for his name with the same GRO reference.
-
I've tried that to the best of my abilities but I'll try some more and cross reference.
At some time they emigrated to Canada and I'm beginning to think it was before 1911. It's difficult to search the Canada census with only her first names but I'll give it a go.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

I've just listed all March 1904 marriages for Barnstaple on freebmd and am looking at page references that could be mistranscribed (eg) 745 and 747 instead of 743
I have just found 6 possible spouses so am searching the 1911 - don't hold your breath!!
-
As expected - nothing
which at the new price
Has the price increased from £9.25? GRO website is still showing that price
-
Looks like her death cert. is on FS ~
Maud Mary CLUFF ~ husband: Herbert Dowsley Cluff
Fathers name: Gammon

claire
EDIT: THIS MAYBE A SECOND MARRIAGE : informant is stepson, but maybe easier to track now
-
There is a tree on a site that has this Herbert Dowsley Cluff marrying a Maud Mary ROGERS
claire
-
I have checked the full GRO index for Rogers/Rodgers marriages March qtr 1904 and there are none in Barnstaple
Perhaps Rogers was a second husband in Canada and Cluff a third??
-
Yes, they were my thoughts ~ not had much luck though searching Rogers over here.
-
Thanks so much both of you.
I'll look into your info Claire.
I might have been looking at the price in $ as I'm in the us and just took a glance.
Lesley

If you order from the GRO website it's £9.25 GBP but some of the genealogy sites charge an awful lot more
-
Any Cluff/Rogers marriage was pre-1918 so I wonder if Maud Mary's first husband died in WW1
http://www.victoriaheritagefoundation.ca/HReg/Fairfield/Memorial228.html
Herbert Dowsley (1882-1974) and Maud Mary (Gammon, 1883-1974) Cluff lived here 1918-24 after moving from Ontario. Herbert was a plumber for Andrew Sheret and later secretary of the Dominion Plumbing & Heating Co. Various tenants occupied this house between 1925-34.
-
Thank You. This is turning into an exciting search. All of you are a wealth of knowledge.
-
That's a good find Carole :)

That's a good find Carole
God bless Google and an unusual name like Herbert Dowsley Cluff :)

Hi any marriage to Maude Mary would appear to have been after the 1921 census of Canada:-
Herbert D Cluff 36 occ Plumber
Evelyn B Cluff 36
James Herbert Cluff 5
Elizabeth Evelyn Cluff 3
Charles Thorper Cluff 2 months
Residing at 1658, Dallas Road, Victoria.
1962 Canada Voters List, Richardson Street.
Herbert D Cluff Retired
Mrs Maud Cluff
Charles T Cluff RCN
Mrs Carol Ann Cluff
Keyboard86
EDIT 1958 Voters list Herbert D Cluff occ Plumber Miss Elizabeth Cluff occ Civil Servant
-
That's some contradictory information. I wonder which is right.

So should have been there in the 1921 Census, but this was found on the 1921 Census.

This is the same address.
Thoughts ?

i think I may have found her on the 1911 census of Brantford, Ontario. She states she is single but she was probably widowed. Maud Rodgers.
I wish I could read some of the other details but it's hard to read.
If you care to take a look.

I definitely think Maud Mary was his second wife ~ a couple of the childrens death certs are on FS, birthyears 1916 and 1921.
It does list both parents Herbert D Cluff and EVELYN ELIZABETH SMETHURST. She was born in England c1883 and emigrated c1909.
claire

Year of birth is correct 1883, looks to be August 3rd
The only thing that bothers me is the box titled "country of birth" ~ it should say England, but there are ditto marks. The last country put was N S ~ which could be Nova Scotia ???
-
I agree - but in some columns it says English,. I wish I could read column 17 where it gives a date of immigration.
Probably grasping at straws here.
Lesley
-
Column 12 is the 'year of immigration'
Column 13 is the 'year of naturalisation' if an alien
Column 17 is something to do with trade ~ maybe how long she had been at her present job ~ looks like
02-09-04 ~ domestic, so had worked at that present job seven years.
claire
-
Box 14 in which she puts ENGLISH is headed 'RACIAL OR TRIBAL ORIGIN'
Box 15 is the box for NATIONALITY ~ she puts Canadian if I'm not mistaken.
Box 16 is the box for RELIGION ~ it's a bit faded
claire
EDIT: I could be wrong about box 15 ~ its very faded :(
-
I am Maud's step-grandson. What information are you still looking for about her?
-
Hello James,
Well the internet is a wonderful thing isn't it.
Maud Mary was my husband's Great Aunt. His Grandmother was Lottie May Gammon.
I was interested to know when she emigrated to Canada, when she married and if she had any children. Also when she died.
You could private message me if you'd prefer.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Lesley

Being a Luddite, I have no idea how to send a private message. Perhaps you could let me know.

Hi Jim
Welcome to RootsChat :)
You need to make three postings before you are able to send a PM ( I see you have already made two posts, so just answer this.)
If you look back at Lesley's post: Can you see where she has "I've not edited my PROFILE yet" ~ under that are two circles, one has what looks like a white square within in.
Press it ~ there you go ~ send a message. :)
Good luck!!

Thanks for your message Claire.
