I wonder if someone can help me solve a family mystery. I am trying to locate the father of Mark Usher Lownds, who was born in Sunderland circa 1883. He was born out of wedlock to a Mary Lownds (formerly Roberts). Mary had been married to a John Lownds and after he died, I understand she had Mark with someone with the surname Usher, albeit Lownds may have been put on Marks birth certificate.

Does he claim any father on his marriage certificate?
Have you found Mark and Mary in 1891?
Any sign of any maintenance order?
-
Hi Ryan
A bit puzzled here! This is the only death I can find in Sunderland. Is this the right John?
Deaths Dec 1888
LOWNDS John 49 Sunderland 10a 294
Mark was born 5 years before this John died.
Births Dec 1883
LOWNDS Mark Usher Sunderland 10a 524
Or did the couple split up?

On the 1901 census he appears to be her grandson - have you got his actual birth certificate?
-
Hi, thank you both for coming back to me on this. Well the 1891 census has a Mary Lownes (should be lownds) as a widow, living with her sons, Robert (20) and Mark (7). We presumed that John had passed when Mary had Mark, however perhaps it was an affair! Appears Marks birth certificate is Mark Usber Lownds, which I am guessing is a written error. Mark married Meg in 1906.
-
When did John Lownds marry Mary?
Thanks
-
Hi - no I havent got the birth certificate. John married Mary 1859, her surname was Roberts
-
That's interesting Chempat! There is no MMN on the GRO Index for Mark, which should be Roberts if he was Mary's son. Are there any naughty daughters I ask!
Giggsy
-
Yes, I was looking for daughters.
Have you the family in 1871, Ryan?
-
No, have the family prior, clearly ive been a bit dense as that would be logical rather than Mary be the mother
-
Could you post details of the 1859 marriage, please?
-
A daughter born 1861?

Keyboard - apologies as I think you have located that 71 census details before on another thread, and I hadnt noted it. So Mary had two daughters, Hannah & Martha, would love to know if either were Marks mother, and who with

Mark's birth certificate will give his Mother's name.
Added:
But as Martha and Lettice die, that leaves Hannah as a contender.
-
So two daughters, Lettice & Martha died? How would I get hold of a birth certificate? I tracked down details for his birth which had Mark Usber Lownds, but not mothers name / maiden name
-
Hi Ryan
Birth certificate on Index gives his correct name - Usher, not Usber.
Births Dec 1883

Thanks Giggsy, how would I get a copy of that certifiate?

You can order online from the General Register Office:
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/app_select.asp
You have to register on the site before you can use it.
You will need the details from the Index entry I gave you.
Births Dec 1883
LOWNDS Mark Usher Sunderland 10a 524
So Sunderland is the Registration District
10a is the Volume Number
524 is the Page Number
Certs cost £9.25 inclusive of postage.
Don't buy certs from anyone else as they will charge you double for exactly the same thing!
Cheers

Hi,
I think as Hannah is Hannah Mary she might have married Michael USHER in 1885 as Mary,

Mary Jane ROBSON
Robert BOWNESS
Michael USHER
(Robert BOWNESS can be found on future censuses with a Mary Jane)
In the censuses "Mary" is now Hannah.

If Mark Usher LOWNDS is their son maybe Michael was at sea when he was born and they couldn't get married in time? I wonder if Mark ever went to live with them between the censuses?

Hi Daisy
This is great information thank you. In the 1891 census Mark Usher Lownds is down as the son of Mary Lownds, 51, who is Hannah's mother. He is then down in the 1901 census as Mary's grandson. There is no indication he lived with Hannah. He then ceases to use the name Usher at some point in time. The birth certifcate has no fathers name & a Mary Lownds down as the mother, I have presumed this was Hannah's mother trying to spare the shame of her daughter having a child out of wedlock. Which was frowned upon at that time. However maybe it was Hannah. It's all a little odd. I am also trying to track down the family of Mary Lownds mother, she was a Mary Mc Grath & married to a John Roberts, he was born 1803 in yorshire & she was born around 1811 in Ireland. Would love to know where Mary McGrath was from

Hello there... delighted to meet another Lownds family member!!! My name is Gillian Barth. My great grandfather Frederick George Lownds was Mark's brother and also son of John and Mary Roberts. Other siblings (as you noted) were Hannah, John William, Frederick George (my great grandfather), Robert and Mark Usher Lownds. I have info on most of them if you still haven't found it. The challenge I am having is going further back in time (beyond John and his father William).
My great-grandfather Frederick had a daughter Florence who married a Brass from Sunderland and moved to Toronto, Canada in 1921. My parents have done some research on the Lownds if it would be helpful.

Hannah had seven children with Michael Usher. One of their children's name was Mark which may account for the comment above about being Mary's son and grandson...
