Title: Bruce, Crighton, Fyvie, Mutch
Post by: Gavin Wilson on Tuesday 24 January 17 18:05 GMT (UK)
Currently I'm researching my Family on my Paternal Grandmothers side. I've some information on names and years as follows ...
Bruce's - Peterhead/Foveran/Ellon/Aberdeen 1800's - 1900's
Crichton's - New Deer 1830's - 1900's
Fyvie's - Tarves/New Deer 1700's - 1900's
Mutch's - New Deer 1800's - 1900's
Also McLennan's from Moray, Ross & Cromarty
I'm happy to share all my research, of which I am looking not only at the Family connections, but their residence, employment and any other interesting facts.

I have lists of the monumental inscriptions from Ellon and New Deer. If you want anything looked up, let me know. You have maybe seen these already.

I have George Crighton (1792-1873) in my tree. He married Margaret Brebner (1792 - 1897) and their gravestone is in New Deer cemetery. Their son Alexander (1821 - 1902) is my great-great grandfather. I have found that there are several potential spellings of "Crichton", including Crighton and Creighton, so following the trail can be a challenge.

TY RWTalyor, the spelling changes are a headache, but I've now taken a note of the variations you gave. Also TY you've given me dates for George and Margaret which I didn't have, have you their marriage details? Were they born & died in New Deer? Also can you share a picture of the headstone in New Deer? I also am collecting any information on their Occupations and Houses/Addresses/Farms etc if you know of anything. I didn't even have their son Alexander, Just David. George is my 3rd Great Grandfather, David is my 2nd Great Grandfather, therefore Alexander is my 2nd Great Granduncle.
TY I am elated.

I've had a look and the only persons mentioned above with a recorded gravestone are the couple at New Deer mentioned by RWTaylor.

In memory of George Crighton Hillhead of Auchreddie d. 27 June 1873 aged 82.
His wife Margaret Brebner d. 14 Dec. 1887 aged 94. Their dau. Rachel Crighton d. 27 Apr. 1919 aged 85.

George Crighton married Margaret Brebner on 16 February 1811 at New Deer. George Crighton died 27 June 1873 at Auchreddie, New Deer. His son David registered the death. His death certificate gives his occupation as "crofter". His parents were alexander Crighton and Jane Webster.

Margaret Crighton (nee Brebner) died 11 December 1887 (sorry, I mis-typed the date earlier) at Auchreddie. She died from "general debility" and David again registered the death. Her parents were Peter Brebner (farmer) and Mary Anderson.

I'll have to find the photo of the gravestone.

Spelling variants of Brebner include Bremner and Brember. I have also found people spelled both Bremner and Brymer, and I have also come across Brammer.

A bit of digression but brebner.com has zillions (well maybe not quite that many) Breber/Bremner/etc... records.

I see not its not running at the moment perhaps John is doing an update of sorts.  You can always email John he was born in Aberdeen and he was very good at responding.

I'm having a problem attaching the photo of the gravestone of George Crighton, Margaret Brebner and Rachel Crighton. I'll have to try again.

Meanwhile, I think that George and Margaret Brebner had quite a large family:
Peter (1812 -?)
George (1815 -?)
Mary (1815 -?)
William (1816 -?)
James (1819 -?)
Alexander (1821-1902)
Bathia (1832 -1921)
Rachel (1834 - 1919)

Hope that helps.

Good plan. Especially as you will never get to the end of what is possible.

My advice is, keep your research permanently offline. If you put it online, it will be pirated and splattered all over the place; you will give A******y a free gift of all your hard work. Share it carefully with family members only.

I have put the bare bones of mine (i.e. my direct ancestors only) on various sites. That way anyone who is related can get in touch, but I don't get bombarded by people who have no chance of being provably related. Along the lines of, "I see that your 4ggmother was Margaret Smith born 1780 in Aberdeen. My 2ggfather was John Smith born 1860 in Birmingham. Are we related?"

My Wife's G-G Grandparents were John Mutch & Eliza Buchan.
Their Daughter Elspet Chrighton Mutch (1870 - 1952) Married Alexander Leith (1864 - 1921) at Udny in 1891.
Their Daughter Williamina Munro Leith (1908 - 1983) Married John McKenzie (1902 -1957) at Belhelvie in 1930

Any information you could share round this line would be much appreciated, as I've just got the bare bones outlined above

My Wife's middle names are Williamina Leith by the way.

If you are still looking for links to the Crightons of New Deer, I have just come across a baptism certificate for George Crighton (b 1846), in Montreal. He was the son of George Crighton, born 1815 and the son of George Crighton and Margaret Bremner.  (Lots of Georges, so this could get confusing...)

George (b 1815) was serving with the 93rd Highlanders (service record available on FindMyPast website if you are signed up) and served in Canada in the 1840s. He and his wife Isabella had two children while he was serving there - William (b 1843) and George (b 1846).

I have attached the certificate to a query I made in the Canada board, so I can't add it here, but you can track it down there.
