My GGGrandfather William Beattie was born in Kilbarchan (Linwood) in 1854. Father , Joseph ; Mother, Faithy (Faithful). I have just discovered that he had a twin brother James who has never been mentioned in the family. As William had another brother born in 1860 called James Wallace Beattie I am assuming that the first James died. I can however find no trace of a death during those 6 years. Any suggestions welcome.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
I have just discovered that he had a twin brother James who has never been mentioned in the family.
Where/how did you discover it?
-
Appeared on Family Search Baptisms which showed dates of birth as identical.

SP has an 1860 death in Kilbarchan for a James Beatey - have you already discounted it?

I don't know what I was doing wrong but this one has not come up in my searches. I suspect it's the one but as brother James was born in June 1860 the death and birth are very close. Thanks for your help.

I selected "wild card search" and just searched on James Beat* as nothing was coming up on Beattie or Beatie

Thanks for comments. Successfully found death of James (whose twin brother was my great grandfather ) who died at the age of 5. He died of water on the brain (hydrocephalus). The strange thing about this is that I have twin grandsons who were born with hydrocephalus which was treated. We celebrated their eighteenth birthday last week. One of them is James. :)

Talk about coincidences - that is really spooky but how awful that he died so young of something that is treatable today.

My Great great Aunt Agnes Wotherspoon Elder married a Joseph Burns Beattie and they lived in Kilbarchan. I think he may have died perhaps earlier than the 1940's. He was a commercial traveller.

Just a note of caution, the OP mentioned "Kilbarchan (Linwood)".
Originally Linwood was part of Kilbarchan Parish even though they are 3 miles apart so the Beatties of Kilbarchan (Linwood) may not be necessarily to the Beatties from Kilbarchan.

Inadvertent duplicate post removed.

At the time being discussed, records were compiled on the basis of the parish. Linwood is in the parish of Kilbarchan. Note that all the birth/baptism records of the family are recorded in the parish/Registration District of Kilbarchan.
The fact that the town/village/whatever of Linwood may not see itself as part of the town/village/whatever of Kilbarchan in the 21st century is irrelevant in the context of this thread.
In the 1861 census the family being discussed here are the only Beatties in Kilbarchan. Not only that, but the 1861 census is the only one in which there is a family of Beatties in the parish of Kilbarchan. (There's a 23-year-old Isabella Beatie in 1891 and a 24-year-old Grace Beatie in 1911.)
Therefore there are no other 'Beatties of Kilbarchan' in the 19th century to whom this family might or might not be related.
One might take issue with the phrase 'Beatties of Kilbarchan' because in older Scottish records the word 'of' specifically implies that the person so described is a member of the family who own the place to which (s)he is linked.
A tenant is normally described as 'in' a place, and a temporary resident is 'at'.
