Hi
Does anyone know if any Marriage Licences for parishes in the Archdeaconry of Lewes (East Sussex) area are available online?
Thanks :)

There is this book, not sure if there are the dates you are after though
https://archive.org/stream/calendarofsussex00chicuoft#page/n17/mode/2up
Might be worth checking the site to see if Volume one is on there also

Hi there
Thanks for that. This volume covers some of the dates I'm after and hopefully I can find other volumes on there as well.
Thanks again

Do you know if Lewes marriage licences for the period before this date are also online?

Have you searched the site already highlighted for similar books? It's a potential treasure trove.
If you have a large number Sussex interests, then it might be worthwhile investing in the Sussex Marriage Index available from SFHG here:

Hi Nell
Thanks for the link. I did have a quick look the SFHG website last night but unfortunately I can't see any online indexes. I also looked at the Internet Archive (www.arhive.org) and on Google Books but couldn't find any online references.
The index available from the SFHG looks good but unfortunately it is a bit too expensive for me at the moment.
Thanks for the info and I shall keep this index in mind.
Best Wishes

Hi Claire
On first glance I thought this was just marriage Licences for the Archdeaconry of Chichester. However I've now found the links on there for the Archdeaconry of Lewes.
Unfortunately though when I clicked on the links all I got was black pages downloaded rather than the book. Do you know if these volumes are available on the Internet Archive as well?
Many many thanks for this.

I don't know what search terms you used on the Internet Archive (I used Sussex Marriage Licences) , but there is this volume too:
https://archive.org/stream/calendarofsussex01chicuoft#page/n13/mode/2up
The same book is available on the link that Claire gave, but it might take a little while to download.

Nell - Think that is the one Matt is looking for :)

Hi Nell
I tried this link again today and got it working. I think I must have had problems with the website on the first day I tried.
I don't suppose you know if Marriage Licences for Kent post 1750 can be seen online? In particular 1751-1800.
Thanks again

I'm afraid I don't have much personal experience of searching for Kent records.
Have you checked the Kent Resources board here on RootsChat where a large number of resources are listed, with links.
Also check all the listings of the main genealogy sites - there might be something useful on them. Free 14 day trials are often available.
Otherwise, a good search engine might assist! ;)

Hi Nell
Yes I've tried most of those and I'll keep looking around. The internet doesn't defeat me that easily lol! I usually download books like this from Google Books or the Internet Archive but couldn't find the volumes I want. Of course it might simply be a technical issue.
If I can't view them online I am sure the volumes will be available in London at the National Archives, British Library, or Society of Genealogists.

Just a quick question about the Kent Marriage Licence. Can anyone tell me if the date in the books is the date of the marriage or just the date the licence was issued? I have found some entries which are dated before the date that I have for the marriage.
Many thanks in advance

The date quoted on the Bond and/or Allegation is the date of issue, not the date of the marriage.

Hiya
Thanks for confirming that. In some cases I've noticed the date given in the text is the same as the marriage date or the day before. I guess in these cases the wedding must have taken place in haste.
Many thanks again

Yes, one of the reasons for obtaining a licence was to do away with having to wait for the banns to be read.
