Title: William King, Irish optician in Tottenham
Post by: Meelystar on Thursday 29 June 17 12:52 BST (UK)
Hi everyone

I'm after some help finding some more on this family.
William King b. 1784 in BELFAST. His wife is Mary born in Belfast or DUBLIN 1781-5.
I can only find William on 1851 census living in Tottenham with Mary, he is listed as an optician. He is also listed as an optician on his son's marriage certificate and baptism record.
In 1861 Mary is listed as wife but there is no William present she is described as the wife of an optician however.

They had the following known children -

Jane abt 1811 (age varies) GLASGOW (no baptism located however I think I MAY have found one years ago which I cannot now locate?)
Jane is my direct ancestor, she married Benjamin Lawrence and other than a baptism I have info on her.

Caroline Abt 1821 IPSWICH. She appears in 1851 as a servant, listed with sister Jane and her family.  There are a lot of possibilities for marriage or death nothing likely in Edmonton reg district.

Benjamin 1830, TOTTENHAM. He is listed variously as an engraver, optician, watchmaker and jeweller. He marries Susanna Balaam and I have him up until 1901 census.

There is a likely possibility for 1841, a Mary, Caroline & Benjamin are living together in Tottenham. However William is not present? Mary is a hawker and Caroline is working in a factory.

Can anyone find the missing censuses for William and likely deaths for him and Mary? What happened to Caroline? Were there any further children? I think they could be born any where! There are very large gaps so it seems unlikely that there wasn't. I wondered about the Susan Rowling who witnessed Benjamin's wedding but I haven't had any luck tracing her....

Thanks
Amelia

ciderdrinker, thanks for that info. The baptism for Benjamin I already had though I hadn't reviewed it recently to note the difference in occupation, I think William must have been a travelling optician hence his only appearing in one census with Mary. However I'm feeling a little doubtful regarding the last unless they were late baptisms as William and Mary look to have been born 1780s. George William in 1840 doesn't seem to be physically possible. I will look into these other children and see what I can find.

Ok so George William mmn Risley. So not an illegitimate birth, there could be another son called William though. Will look for a marriage.

Update - marriage in 1838 Edmonton. Trying to find a transcription. A Susannah Rawlings appears on the same page so it's looking promising as a Susan Rowling witnessed Benjamin's marriage and I couldn't find many of them living in London. Guessing that this William having children could be another son of my William King.

Ok looks like William King and Mary Risley are unconnected. His father is given Richard King, a labourer.

Thanks looks like a possiblity. However not convinced he would be described as a pedlar judging by the fact that his son was a watchmaker I would presume that William was skilled in his profession.

Can anyone see a likely baptism for Jane in Glasgow?

Hi Amelia

Just found this post and thought I would connect.
I'm possibly descended from Susannah King, possible daughter of this William King so I am also on the trail - I would be interested in anything else you have found or checking we have any DNA in common!
best wishes, Ruth
