Title: applebey/davison
Post by: anthonyhermann on Monday 10 July 17 19:50 BST (UK)
i have been trying to work out a branch of my family
Sarah Elizabeth Davison born 1827 in hull married Thomas Appleby born 1828 from Easingwold
I can find a marriage certificate to match but its from Manchester.
I can see her sisters name as witness Mary Ann Davison born 1930 and her father Benjamin Davison
Sarah and Thomas lived in Hull.
Thomas is not a problem its Sarah's family all I can find is that I think they lived in Armley Leeds as I cant find anything about them from hull
Can anyone put me right please would be greatfull
thank you
Tony Hermann

If she was born in Hull, she was baptised in Leeds. Where does the birth information come from?

Name   Sarah Davison
Birth Date   23 May 1827
Baptism Date   16 Sep 1827
Leeds, St Peter, Yorkshire
Father   Benjamin Davison
Mother   Ann Davison

There is a mark at the side of the record, but I'm not sure what that means.

There is a tree on a******y which names the parents of Sarah Elizabeth as Benjamin and Ann - the couple from Armley

I think this is maybe a guess

That Benjamin is a Tailor - on Sarah Elizabeth's marriage her father's occ is Painter

Also how certain are you that Mary Ann Davison (a witness at Sarah Elizabeth's marriage) was her sister -could she possibly be a sister in law??? (I'm guessing now)

There is this family in 1851
78 Clopton St MANCHESTER
Benjamin Davison Head M 23 Joiner &Builder HULL Yorks
Mary Ann wife M 24 hemsford
Thomas son 6mths Manchester
George W Stenfield Lodger U 16 Entering clerk
Eliza Mitchell visitor 18 U Servant Helmsford
HO107 2221 713 51

could Benjamin be Sarah Elizabeth's brother??

there is this marriage -which looks like Benjamin was Sarah Elizabeth's brother

St John Manchester
Marriage 28 Jun 1849
Benjamin Davison full age Bachelor Joiner Welbeck St father Benjamin Davison occ Painter
Mary Ann Brooks full age Spinster Chorlton Lane father Not stated
winesses both made their mark
Thomas Williams & MARY ANN DAVISON

so could it be that Sarah Elizabeth had a sister mary Ann and a sister in law of similar name??

so did Benjamin and family move to Lancashire from Hull?

Have found a little more info which seems to pull this family together

Marriage
31 Mar 1852 St Johns Manchester Lancs
Robert Swales full age Bachelot Painter Clopton St father Thomas Cook occ sailor
Mary Ann Davison full age Spinster  Clopton St father benjamin Davison occ Painter
witnesses Benjamin & Mary Ann Davison ( so Mary Ann's brother and sister in law?)

note _ Mary Ann's brother Benjamin lived at Clopton St in 1851
all made their mark

then
1871
7 Hodge St Drypool Kingston upon Hull Yks
Robert Swales Head M 41 Painter Howden Yks
Mary Ann wife 40 Hull Yks
Ann E daughter 16 Milliner Hull
Catherine Davison Mother in law widow 73 Yorkshire
RG10 4779 14 21

so it looks like mary Ann regarded Catherine (her step mother) as her mother

will try to find more on census

Found Benjamin in 1861!!!!

1861
Breeze Hill Oldham Lancs
Benjamin Davison Head M 55 House Painter Doncaster Yks
Chaterine (assume this should be Catherine!) wife 62 Yorks
Richard Barff Lodger U 45 House Painter Hull Yks

Breeze Hill is the address on Benjamin's burial record -so that ties things together nicely
Haven't found them in 1851

There is this baptism Doncaster Yks
Benjamin Davison
born 27 Sept 1803
baptism 23 Oct 1803
parents William Davison & Jinny Stear

another interesting little bit of information
Robert Swales (who married benjamin's daughter Mary Ann) was the illegit son of Elizabeth Swales- baptism 11 Oct 1829 son of Elizabeth Swales ( seems he knew who his father was as he named him on marriage cert as Thomas Cook)

1861
Hodge St Drypool Kingston upon Hull
Robert Swailes Head M 31 Painter Hull Yks
Mary Ann wife 30 Hull
Annie E daughter 6 scholar Manchester Lancs
RG9 3580 31 19

and Robert in 1851
Pinfold St Howden Yks
Elizabeth Swaile Head Unmarried 50 Domestic servant Howden Yks
Robert Swaile son unmarried 21 Painter's apprentice Howden Yks
HO107 2358 217 3

1841 Mary Ann's father was in Howden - wonder if Robert was apprenticed to him???

I've gone a long way around but hopefully it all fits together

I have found no further information on Sarah Elizabeth's youngest sibling Christopher William Davison - maybe he died young -no information yet to prove/disprove

Just an update I have been looking and sorting the information you sent and I'm 99% now on the right line. I found Sarah Elizabeth in the 1941sencus but not with her family she was 13 and livening with a lot of others all ages but the 41 does not help to tell me why. Christopher passed away in 33
16 mths.  trying to find why they were in Manchester with them been painters only thing I can think is that's were the work was at the time.
Anyway more to do on that
Regards
Tony.

I think this is Sarah in 1841

Saville St Kingston upon Hull
Ruth Hulley 65 widow
Sarah Davison 12
both born in Yorkshire

there are lots more people in the same residence but they are not living as part of Ruth Hulley's family - only Sarah is
HO107 1232 15 17 27 17

I think Sarah davison was living with her maternal grandmother

Baptisms
28 Dec 1800 Catherdral St Peter Sheffield
Hannah Hully
parents Christopher & Ruth Hully

We found a marriage for Benjamin Davison & hannah Hulley

Hannah age at death makes her b.c. 1800

maybe the little child Christopher who died was named after his maternal Grandmother??

worth checking??
