Hi All, i am currently researching a family tree for a friend and have become a little stuck as to where to turn to looking for info on his grandfather John Hayton.
The info i have so far is as follows
John Hayton married Eva Maud Holley in Reading in Sept 1933
it appears that on 27.05.1938 Eva and her 3 children boarded the Terukuni Maru from London and were heading to Gibraltar with the intention of living there. the address is given as Reading however on the passenger list there is no mention of John Hayton (husband)
Next we see her 2 years later on the 29th May 1940 departing from Port Said, Egypt and landing in Liverpool, again with no John but this time a daughter who is 1 year old as well as her 3 other children.
So i assume at some point they must have left Gibraltar for Egypt ? it all seems confusing to me, but the biggest mystery is who and where is John (father) ? i did think military service ?
Any clues would be gratefully recieved

What is his occupation on his marriage cert?

GRO army birth indexes show an Ann ? Hayton registered in Gibraltar 1939 ref 27

Looking at that 1940 incoming shipping list there are a lot of families without the Male 'Head' of the house also lots of military personnel mainly in the 'cabins'
-
Looking at shipping records they must have returned before 1939 as they are listed on the Oronsay on Apr 22 1939 going to Gibraltor
Listed as Mrs HAYTON (A) and Mstrs HAYTON (aged 5, 3, and 2¼) without first names and referenced as "Merc. Marine Dpt. Board of Trade SW"

Not got the marriage cert yet as only started doing this tree yesterday, and am doing it as a favor for a friend so was trying not to spend money on certs unless it's a complete brick wall. I did think Ann must have been born in Gibraltar

Ann M is listed returning with the family in 1940

There is a John HAYTON aged 27 listed as a passenger on the COMORIN on Nov 25 1938 and then crossed through
His address was given as 15 Southampton Street, Reading, Berks and occupation Soldier
He was bound for Gibraltar
Also there is an online tree that shows he died in 1992 Hatfield
