Marriage Place: Alwalton, Huntingdonshire, England
Phillimore Ecclesiastical Parish Map:
View this parish
Father: Mantle Rayner
Spouse: George Hicks
George and Charlotte emigrated to South Australia in 1855
I cannot find either on the 1851 census, but i have found Charlotte on the 1841, in nottinghamshire no birthplace stated.
Family stories have them from Cornwall, but I can find nothing in the regs to prove that.

Mantle Rayner was previously married to Ann Martin - 20th August 1789 in St Giles without, Cripplegate, London.
Their daughter, Mary, married my relative, Charles Thorpe, in Peterborough in 1819.
They had seven other children, all born in Tottenham, London.
Charlotte of 1819 also died in that year and a second Charlotte was baptised on 19th April 1822 in Stanground.
I only have details on Mary and Charlotte's family. Please let me know if you would like more details.

Charlotte Rayner. Burial date 28 Oct 1819. St John the Baptist. Stanground.
Charlotte Rayner. baptised 19 Apr 1822. St John the Baptist. Stanground.
Maybe...
Mantle Raynor. baptised 27 May 1756. St Mary's, Ely, Cambridge. father Will. mother Mary.
Mantle Raynor. married Elizabeth Snow. 04 Aug 1819. St John the Baptist. Stanground.

Re the 1851 Census, Charlotte was a cook in Castor cum Milton, Northamptonshire, and George was a servant in Orton Longville.
I just ran a report on Mary Rayner/Raynor's descendants and the total number of people was 221, including spouses. Only a few of Charlottes, mainly because they were in Australia.

Yes I agree with the Charlotte Raynor bapt, as their sons were called William Mantle Hicks and Thomas Raynor Hicks.
George hicks's brother, Charles, married Ann Spenser in 1850 in Chesterton, and they also emigrated in 1855 with George and Charlotte.
-
In the 18561 census, what was George's stated place of birth?

Thanks Trish
I am getting a handle on the Rayner/Raynor side, now I am trying to confirm the Hicks side.
Brothers Charles and George 1829 and 1833 were the sons of William and Charlotte Willmott, married in St Edwards, Cambridgeshire, in 1823.
Thats the limit of what I can find at the moment.

I am not sure what is going on here Di.
Ok, originally you asked this;
In the 18561 census, what was George's stated place of birth?
The 1851 for George found by David (dcbnwh) is;
George Hicks, age 17, Servant, born c 1834 Alwalton, Huntingdonshire.
Living in Orton Longville in the Shelton Household.
I have given you all of this Georges Siblings, Parents Marriage, Census etc.
Not sure why you are adding Baptisms in Cambridgeshire to a different set of Parents?
Trish :)

Thanks for that David :)

Re William Elms who was living with Elizabeth Hicks, this is his baptism:
https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/59bd0b7d791e3b694f98c0fa
From the registration of the birth of his brother, Abraham, in 1840, his mother's maiden name was Lilley.
Ruth Elms death was registered in Peterborough in 1847, age 57, and William married again:
https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5817e45ee93790eb7fbfeaf5?search_id=59bd0c6f791e3b694f98c3f9&ucf=false
Ruth's age on the 1841 census is 10 years lower than the death registration and her probable baptism is:

Freereg is always my first site I search, then Ancestry, then Family Search then all the others.
George died 1881 in Sth Australia, father William, mother Elizabeth. Charles died 1910 in SA, father William, mother Elizabeth.
Charlotte died 1891 d/o Mantle.
Charles and George bapts both reg in St Andrew. Alwalton. Cambridgeshire
I am sorry, these tiny little counties, parishes are doling my head in. Alwalton to Whaddon is 57 miles.
As its midnight here, I will try again in the morning.
Thanks Trish.

After spending hours on Ancestry, I am more confused than ever especially as there are 2 possible families in the 1841 census.
1841 whaddon
William Hicks 45
Elizabeth Hicks 43
Lettice Hicks 14
Hannah Hicks 10
William Hicks 6
Emma Hicks 1 Mo
and 1841 awalton
william hicks 35 ag lab
Elizabeth 30
charles 11
george 7
ammma?? daughter 7 months
The whadon ones I have followed through the census until 1871.
the Awalton family in the census after 1841 I am having trouble finding, probably because of a few mis-transcriptions.'
yet I found on freereg, all the children's baptisms in alwalton.
I don't think the whaddon parish has been transcribed, as there is nothing for it on freereg.
I am sticking with the parish names as the counties keep changing.
Thanks Di

The whereabouts of the family has been pointed out on previous replies.
Emma and her family appear on later censuses after her marriage.

Hi Dianne
I am a direct descendant of George and Charlotte in Australia. We were always told we were of Cornish descent but all my enquiries show George and Charlotte came from Alwalton and came to Aust in 1855. His parents were Elizabeth Elms and William who were married at Water Newton and lived at Alwalton. From my research I believe Hannah may have died and Emma married and lived at Longthorpe.
I have been unable to locate where William was born but both Charles and George had Yaxley as the area they came from on the passenger list.
Charlotte was the second child of Mantle in his second marriage as someone has already stated.
Cheers
david
