Title: 1841/1851 census Ardingly Botting please
Post by: ballgarside on Tuesday 02 August 05 22:45 BST (UK)
Hi.  Could someone please find the details of the following Bottings on the Ardingly censuses for 1841 and/or 1851:
Henry b.1781
Charlotte b. approx. 1784
Benjamin b.1807
John b.1809
James b.1813
Charlotte b.1817 (may not be there because may have married.)
William b.1820
Edward b.1822
Charlotte b.1817 (may not be there because may have married.)

I realise this is a big task and there may be more than one entry with the same name but any information will be gratefully received.

Thanks.

I'm just off on my hols.  If nobody looks up 1841 for you in the meantime, I'll have a look when I get back.

Hope you can wait that long.

the 1841 for Ardingly is online at the opc site
www.sussex-opc.org
1851 Ho 107 1642 F 101
Benjamin Botting 32 labourer b Lindfield Living at Kent St, Lindfield
Elizabeth  40 b Gibralter
Does not match with the age though.
The others are much the same.  there are the right names but not in Ardingly.    Can yoo give any more details on them?  I knwo this are well.  In fact we had a Botting family living in our old house in 1851.  It is a very common name.  I also have the parish registers for Ardingly from 1558 - 1812
Henry son of William and Ann Botten bap Feb 11 1781 born Jan 13
if you have not got that!

All the Bottings that I am looking for were borin in Ardingly, except Charlotte, who was borin in Balcombe.  I have a feeling that some may have died young, as they don't all appear on the census on sussex-opc.  Henry and Charlotte died in the 1850s and Benjamin was living with them at the time of their death.  He never married.  I found when he died.  As for the others, who knows.  I don't know how accurate the transcription on sussex-opc is, as Henry, Charlotte and Benjamin don't appear on the 1841 transcript, whereas they do on 1851.

They might well have been in Lindfield, Balcombe, West Hoathly or another village close by.   They all run into one another.
Having said that I was just looking at the parish register and the various spellings and went back to the 1851 and there they are under Bottin!  Sorry I missed them first time.  Very careless!

Henry Hd 7? rec Parish relief b Ardingly
Charlotte wi 70 b Balcombe
Benjamin so 44 ag lab b Ardingly
If he was getting parish relief there may well be something about him in the parish chest if it still exists.   Lewes?

Thanks Andrea.  So no other Bottings in 1851.  I am inclined to believe that the others may have died.  What is a parish chest by the way and what does it contain?  Where is it to be found?

Parish chest is all the details of the parish dealings and wheelings.  It contains everything from payments for work done in the village to people applying for help to buy food and bastardy bonds on reluctant fathers.  Plus ca change!
If it still exists it will be in the Record office.   I am sure that Chris in 1066land will know more about these things.  He is on holiday at the moment but I am sure he will help when he gets back.

There are several Botting families in the 1851 census for the East Grinstead area. Two or three of the families are at Whitely Hill Forest in Worth.

Do you want the details?

Thanks Diane.  I guess the Henry and Charlotte are the ones I'm looking for, though why they are living in seperate houses I don't know.  In 1851 they were living together.  Edward is probably their son.  Benjamin appears on the 1851 census and as for the others, who knows.  As for other areas, it probably isn't worth doing a lookup on 1841, as no places of birth are given.  However, I would be interested to know if John Botting b.1809, James Botting b.1813, Charlotte Botting b.1817 (may not be there because may have married.) and William Botting b.1820 appear in other towns or villages on 1851 census.  1851 gives places of birth I think.
