I have 4 possible matches coming up on GRO, but they are all listed as PEMBROKE UNION.
WILLIAMS, JOHN JOHN GRO Reference: 1839 M Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION Volume 26 Page 33
WILLIAMS, JOHN LEWIS GRO Reference: 1839 M Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION Volume 26 Page 642 Order
WILLIAMS, JOHN - GRO Reference: 1839 S Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION Volume 26 Page 618 Order
WILLIAMS, JOHN PICTON GRO Reference: 1839 J Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION Volume 26 Page 643
Has anyone researched John and might have evidence of which one was born in Monkton ? Alternatively if anyone can rule out one of the possibles, means I will have to order fewer PDF's
thanks in advance, Geoff

earliest census I have him on is 1871 and he's married/ head of house.
His marriage cert, to Martha Hill, states father is also John.
There's just so many John Williams to choose from, so I suspect the first entry, I should check a few years either side as well to eliminate date mis-matches

thanks for the searches, I have two choices born in Monkton,
John son of John, b 1839
&
John son of Thomas, b 1838
I might not be able to find any more evidence but given the census records for John I have, all estimate his birth in 1839, except one which suggest 1840, I tend towards John son of John, b 1839, rather than the 1838 option.
I know there can be variation in DOB worked out from census, especially if adult ages appear to be in multiples of 5, but his ages on census records are shown as :
1871 - 41 which is a mis-transcribed 31
1881 - 42
1891 - 52
1901 - 62
these are the census records when he was married and he died in 1910
this is probably the best conclusion I can make at this point. I need to make a note on my tree on how I reached this conclusion.
Do other people record how they came to certain conclusions ?

...and then I remember I have john and Martha's wedding cert which shows John Williams father is John Williams - Doh !
