Hi Nice People, Having tried to find out about my grandfathers' past I have finally got his
death certificate. It tells me that he died on the 16th of August 1944 at ROCKLANDS, Queens Road,
Aberystwyth.
As the fates would have it I happened to standing in Queens Road when I was told by the lovely
lady in the registrars office where it was . So, I walked up and down Queens Road but couldn't
find Rocklands. I've also found his date of birth, but I can't find out where so I could get his birth
certificate. His birthdate was 30th November 1878 and it was somewhere close to where he died.
So, I'd like to know where Rocklands is and where David Davies was born on the 30th November
1878, or directions where to look. Thank you - Keith
-
Hello
Do you know when he got married? The certificate should give the name of his father to start looking on census etc
Where has his exact date of birth come from without a certificate?
Appreciate David Davies isn't the easiest name to work with.
-
There are a few birth options - did he ever use a middle name or just plain David
All Aberystwyth registrations
David James Davies Dec 1878
2 David Davies and 1 David John Davies Jan 1879
-
Hang on....if you do a search for Rocklands Queens Road Aberystwyth several items come up so I would have a look at those.
-
Google Earth shows Rocklands as a stone built house on the right hand side of Queens Road, past the registry office (Queens Hotel) heading north towards Constitution Hill.

Keith,
By reference to the adjacent addresses in the 1939 Register, it looks as though Rockland was next door to (or at least close by) the Boar's Head Hotel.
Correspondingly, searching for Rockland today brings up a mention of a Rockland House in Queen's Road which, looking at street view, is situated behind the Glengower Hotel and next door to what used to be* the Boar's Head - the pub frontage of which is still clearly evident [*it closed in 2001].

Hi Nice People,
Thank you for your help so far and I will try to answer your questions
He married my Grandmother, Mary, on the 30th Jan 1901 at Christ Church, Hoxton, London
She died in 1929 . He re-married in Mid 1935 a lady named Alice Bird in Hackney, London (as per 1939 census)
with whom he lived in 148 Graham Road, Hackney ( which is where I got his birthdate as 30th November 1878 until, while on a home visit he died in Aberystwyth and is supposed to be buried in Aberffrwd cemetery.
I don't think either he or his father had (either a David or a Daniel) had
a middle name. My cousin says he was "laid out" in a flat above a Garage
in Queens Road that's no longer there. Cousin was only 5 at time.

Is the exact date from a certificate? If so it should give the name of his father to start with.
Was his wife Mary Elias?
David Davies married Mary Elias 30 December 1901 Hoxton :-\
His father also David Davies a farm labourer and one of the witnesses was Elizabeth Davies.

hi Nice People,
I think he went back to Aberystwyth because he was born and raised in that area.
My cousin believes he knew he was ill and wanted to see where he grew up in
happier times. He wanted to be buried in Aberffrwd cemetery but I can't find any
proof. Oh, and yes he did marry Mary Elias.

I see you have started a new post on this man.

It may be better if you can answer the last two queries posted by Milliepede & keyboard posted on here and keep all the information together

Hi have not checked out at present, but wonder why a 2 year old was a boarder in a household with no apparent parents present eg the David Davies aged 2 b Salem in the household of a Harriett Tisdale aged 50
Residing North Gate Street, Aberystwyth
Census ref RG11/5445/6/5
Keyboard86
EDIT I see Queens Road, North Gate/Northgate Street and Thispian Street ( Where Harriet Tysdale was in 1901 census with a Catherine Davies 45 Single b Salem) are very close to each other?
Also a Kate Davies 25 Single b Salem in Queens Road in 1901 also a Mary A Davies aged 8 with Harriett Tysdale 62 in 1891 census?

Thank you for your help so far.
33 Central Street, Holborn is a good address. My Nans' single name was Elias.
In the 1939 census I found Grandad's birthday (30/Nov/1878 ) Also, this is the
first I've heard about Alice A. his 2nd wife that we didn't know about. She was
the one who registered his death in Aberystwyth. He wanted to be buried in that
area and my cousin is convinced he's buried in Aberffrwd cemetery but I couldn't
find him when I looked - but I didn't look at the far end as there was a guy cutting
grass nearby who hadn't seen me and I didn't want to give him a heart attack!
Elizabeth Davies was his sister but Great-granddad was also married twice and I
think Elizabeth was from his first wife and Grandad from his second.
How do you get hold of Electorial records cos I've been told that Great-granddad
was thrown off of his farm because he didn't vote for Landowner he rented the
Farm from. I hope this answers a few of the questions.
Thanks again for helping me - Kind Regards Keith
-
Hi again, where did the information come from that Great Grandad either a David or Daniel married twice, possibly Elizabeth from the first and David the second, have you Elizabeth and David together on a census " Thrown off his farm because he did not vote for the Landowner" do both marriages give his father as David/Daniel and his fathers occupation?

another post which may have info
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=756335.0
Info from marriage entry, 30 Jan 1901 David Davies aged 22, Dairyman, Herbert Street, father David Davies farm labourer & Mary Elias,23, of Cropley Street, father Daniel Elias, collier, deceased, witnesses Albert Edward Rohrig and Elizabeth Davies.
First son, David Daniel, appears to be names after his 2 grandfathers.

OK the threads for the Davies family are indeed puzzling, we know that Elizabeth H Davies married a Leonard C Kemp or Leett she was widowed by 1939 and living with an Elizabeth Davies b 1872 Single at Rocklands, Queen Street, Aberystwyth, Elizabeth H Leett then marries a Hugh Jones 1959 Cardigan North and her death appears to be Elizabeth Hannah Jones b 22nd October 1912 death January 1998 Cardiganshire North aged 86 ( so where is Elizabeth H buried)?
I have located a possible Elizabeth aged 8 and a David aged 2 with a David occ Cowman in 1881?

that family does seem to match some of the info we've been given.
Looking back for the family in 1871 RG10/5560 folio 57 pg 7, there is a different wife, Elinor aged 27, who would appear to be the mother of Mary, John, Elizabeth & Edward. Her death reg looks to be Elinor Davies 33 march qtr 1877 vol 11b pg 40. David then marries Anne - possibly Davies as well march qtr 1878. So David & Elizabeth have different mothers.
In 1891 family are in Cwmrheidol RG12/4559 folio 75 pg 18 but no David but he could be working by that stage. Elizabeth is also not home, couple of possibles for her working as a servant. There is an 8 year old son Enoch, likely birth reg dec qtr 1882 mother's maiden name Davies.

:) The trouble is reading through the posts of Keith, David married two Mary's?
Keyboard86

at least the one you found in Llanddeiniol had a son David and daughter Elizabeth of the right age and was married twice. It's a start!
::)
-
:) It would be interesting to find out where an Elizabeth Davies b 12th December 1872 who was Single 1939 was buried?!

I've tried the council burial search for David & Elizabeth with no success
https://forms.ceredigion.gov.uk/ufs/DHPW_CEMETERY_SEARCH.eb?PARAM_ADMIN_IND=N&ebd=0&ebz=5_1520106160315
Forgot to say that tracing David back in Llanddeiniol, it looks like his mother's name was Mary.
:-\

OK let's try another possible family member who was also in London 1901, Enoch Davies 19 b Aberystwyth occ Milk Carrier with a John Jones & family in St Pancras Census ref RG13/157/158/60

Hi.
Some input from my tree states that Mary Morrice, the Owner of the Carrog Estate in Llandeiniol, notified all her estate tenants that, if they didn't attend Llandeiniol church every Sunday, they would be evicted from their farms and cottages. The ultimatum was given in 1860 and in 1861 14 farm families and 13 cottager families were evicted. Mary was the Grand-daughter of the Rev. Edward Richards; he owned the estate and she inherited it on his death in 1852.
The Davies forebear may have been one of those evicted.
She is shown as living at Bridge St., Aberystwyth at this time. She wasn't married ...what a surprise!
Regards, Peter

Hi Nice People,
Back again with another question.
Could anyone give me an idea where I might prove that my grandfather is buried in aberffwd cemetery . In other words , does anyone know who has the records for aberffwd cemetery burials please.
Also , I think my great grandfather worked in a Mill close by - any ideas!
They were supposed to live one of the "new houses" that must have been built around
1880 ish - are they still there and where are they!
Thank you for any help
Take care - Keith
p.s. I forgot to say that the chapel with the cemetery was a Calvinistic Methodist one but I can't find out who holds the records.
-
It could possibly be that the burial records for Aberffrwd cemetery (if such records have ever existed) are at the Ceredigion Archives in Aberystwyth.

Hi, I know this is a very old thread, but I was googling Rocklands House as I used to live there as a student and i was interested in the history. This thread popped up. You've possibly long since found it but just in case you didn't, there is indeed a room above a garage in that building, (you mentioned this is the description of where your relative was laid out) its clearly visible on Google Street view if you're not in the area.
