I am researching my great grandmother’s family. Her name was Leah Lucilla Nicholls, l have her marriage certificate, she married Arthur James Tufft, her father was William Nicholls. He married Hannah ( not sure of her maiden name maybe Taylor or Yewdall?) in a 1911 census they are both listed as having 7 children, two of whom died. His address in 1903 was The Avenue, Penn, Wolverhampton. Can anyone help with locating Hannah and her lineage? Thank you
-
Was Leah born in 1885?
The birth shows her mothers maiden name as Taylor.
Possible marriage in Dec 1869 Dudley
Fullwood Isaiah
Hughes Elizabeth
Nicholls William
Taylor Hannah
-
The 1891 census gives Hannah birthplace Worfield Shrops
-
The transcript of the 1869 marriage in Sedgley has a few details :
Hannah Taylor b abt 1849 , father George Taylor
William Nicholls b abt 1846 , father Henry Nicholls
-
She is stated as being 21 when married 25/2/1903

Yes looks like there discrepancies. If it’s the same person. Constance May was my grandmother. So who are the parents of Hannah Taylor?
-
I can locate William and Hannah’s registered marriage ,6c 232, England and Wales Civil Reg. Index 1837-1915. Is it possible to view the marriage certificate or do l have to order it, in order to obtain further information? Thanks
-
Try looking on FreeReg:
https://www.freereg.org.uk/
More details are on there.

If you are requesting further help, why do you not include the address and other details from freereg?
-
Yes l have, William Nicholl’s parents were Sarah Corfield and Henry Nichols, l put the address.
Hannah’s father is George but l can’t find her mother’s name.
-
You have Hannah's father as George Taylor and her marriage gives his occupation as millman. You also have a birthplace for Hannah as Worfield, Shropshire from the 1891 census . I think this is the family on the 1851 census :
Geo Taylor head , miller , b 1806 Shropshire
Ann Taylor wife b 1805 Oaken, Shropshire
Mary Ann 23
William 22
Fanny 14
Caroline 11
Geo 10
Elizth 8
Emma 6
Hannah 1 born Rindleford , Staffordshire
address Rindleford , parish of Worfield, Shropshire

Thank you. I noticed on the marriage of Hannah Taylor to William Nicholls that one of the witnesses was Jane Taylor. I am trying to find a Jewish connection in the family.
-
Do l have the correct Hannah? Mother for Leah Lucilla Nicholls, if her siblings are George and Emily in the 1891 Census, she is referred to as Lucilla not L.L , should l assume it’s the correct one? I have noticed another person on myheritage, has the same family but the mother of Lucilla are Hannah Maud Taylor, her parents are Margaret Mansell and John Taylor which is a different track to mine. Can anyone help as l thought l was on the right trail. Thanks
-
There is one way to be certain of Leah Lucilla's parents - purchase the birth certificate. ;)
You can order it direct from GRO - and at the moment you can get a digital copy for £6.00, as opposed to the paper copy for £9.25. https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
You will have to register.
-
Yes l was thinking the same. I have her marriage certificate, perhaps a digital copy may suffice. If l just give her marriage details would this information find her birth certificate?
-
From GRO you will need the following:
Leah Lucilla Nicholls
June quarter 1885
District: Wolverhampton
Volume: 6b
Page: 548
-
Yes l’ve have this reference and awaiting the pdf. If it’s the same person as l have a marriage certificate 1903 and she is listed as being 21 years old. Thanks

Researching the Tufft side . Leah Lucilla Nicholls married Arthur James Tufft, his father is John Tufft a Groom, his father l believe was James Tufft married to Elizabeth Morgan, there is a Tufft family tree, if it’s correct his full name James Tufft Trovdweiner 1818-1883, l cannot find Trovdweiner and no one else has this added to their name, can anyone assist? Thanks
-
Should be Tufft trovdwainer
-
Just as a matter of interest, where did you find this tree?
-
myancestry.co.uk
-
I shall try and get the reference
-
Be careful - I'm seeing that it is an unsafe website!
-
Should be Tufft trovdwainer
or maybe it's Cordwainer, and it's his occupation, not a surname.
-
Ancestry.co.uk should be ok?
-
Yes, but I can't see any evidence on Ancestry.
-
The information from Gary Tufft family tree is; James Tufft trovdwainer was born in1818 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire to Mary Millard 42yrs and John Tufft (1770-1821)
He married Elizabeth Morgan in Wolverhampton on 22/3/1840 when he was 22yrs. Does this help?
-
If you look on FreeReg you can see the details from the marriage.
James was an Iron Brazier. His father,John, was a cordwainer. :)
Pauline J was spot on.

Thank you but what is a trovdwainer?
-
