For the umpteenth time now I have downloaded the WRONG death certificate for Henry LEE last mentioned on his wife's death certificate after the 1901 census at Islington. He was born Henry John LEE to parents John and Julia LEE on the 13th April 1879 and registered at Tottenham Registry.
I cannot find him in 1911 with any certainty, nor in the 1939 Identity Registration, nor the most obvious casualties from WW1, passenger lists etc. So I am gradually eliminating the usual suspects should I change tactics ?
Can anyone come forward with some fresh ideas? apart from waiting for the 1921 census to come online should I last out that long.
cheers
Bob

Stick with it Bob. Did they have children he may have been living with?
-
Have you ruled this death out?
Henry J Lee
Jun 1931 Paddington
Age 52
Born abt 1879
Who was his wife that died?
-
If his parents are alive in 1911 you could check number of children who have died to see if he is still alive at that point.
-
Did you try this death?
June qtr 1931
Paddington Registration District vol 1a, page 78
Lee, Henry J age 52 (so born c1879)
-
So he must have married young if he was widowed in 1901 - how old was his wife when she died?
-
Do you have his wifes burial, could he have been interred with her

Unfortunately no his wife died during childbirth, the baby it seems lived long enough to be named and both deaths are registered on the same volume and page number

Yes that was one of the first "wrong" certificates I bought. A reminder to myself to record the cert details on a Freebmd Postit note that one must belong to someone somewhere!

I have not found for his wife and child's cremation or burial, perhaps not on deceased on line yet. But a good suggestion I should check with the local history library for area covering Islington for advice on that.

You're being a bit mysterious about who his wife was!
Was she "Elen" Lee 22 b Liverpool, in 1901? City Road, district of Holborn. RG13/257/120/8.
If so, was her death registered as Ellen Lee, 21, Jun qtr 1901 Holborn?

another good idea I saw his parents on the 1911 census, massive family, 13 kids, 7 still living 6 died. So far via the GRO I could only find 4 using mothers maiden name indexed.

spot on no mystery, typing finger a bit exhausted

Sadly she was about 21 and her daughter would have been their first. A sad story with hopefully a happier ending for Henry John therefore the incentive to keep looking

OK so the baby was Nellie Lee, mother's maiden name Flynn, born & died Jun qtr 1901 Holborn.
And I see that Henry John Lee fibbed about his age when he married "Helen" Flynn in Hackney on 4 Nov 1900. He claimed to be 28 & Helen 21.

Yes either he did or the vicar got it wrong. I have his 1879 birth registration and he was truthful age wise to the enumerator in 1901

Parents of Henry John were John and Julia Lee so checking back on the census have the following children listed
Alfred 1876
Louisa 1873
Edwin Thomas 1869
Elizabeth Harriet 1862
Minnie Florence 1882
Bertie
Edmund
Thomas William 1885
Henry John 1879
That's only 9 so another 4 to find even before going through to see which have died.
Mothers maiden name Pickering.
-
Possibles for the other 4
Julia 1864
Lucy 1871
George Arthur 1875
Frederick John 1867

Correct except that "Bertie" is John LEE the head's grandson and Elizabeth Harriet's the married daughter's son (someone else made the same mistake on their tree on Ancestry) Elizabeth and her son's surname is SAWYER. Also Edmund and Edwin LEE are one and the same person, so that brings the count back to 7 + 6 as per the 1911 census return. Elizabeth Harriet was the eldest and the youngest Thomas William or otherwise known as plain William on the 1911 of the survivors. Via the GRO index I found other LEE with PICKERING mother births from where I knew the family were living. There are a few questionable ones in the London area who don't appear in the following family census so I am thinking another LEE/PICKERING family somewhere?
-
Ah thanks Bertie fooled me as he was down on census as a son of John and Julia rather than a grandson.
Yes I did wonder if Edwin and Edmund were the same person.
There could be another Lee/Pickering family around but I think Julia is likely to be yours as mother was Julia. She may have died young between census as may a couple of the others.
Might be easier to see who has survived, don't want to over complicate things!

Julia LEE(pickering) died at Edmonton in 1916 and I think John LEE died in 1921 they were not on the electoral rolls for 1918 at the Gordon Road address.
Thomas was not on either death cert as informant. Full name for the mother of Henry was Elizabeth Julia LEE Pickering there was no other, she just went by Julia in later life,
I noted there some LEE/PICKERING births on the GRO index in London but I didn't count them because of where I figured the family were living, ie a Lucy for example.
