Title: Help identifying a family crest
Post by: noytd on Monday 01 January 18 16:53 GMT (UK)
A bit of a long shot ... linked to this post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=784838.0

Not the clearest or best of images, but I was wondering if anybody with a knowledge of heraldry might be able to identify this crest?

Unfortunately this is the best I can get out of the image, using a 45x magnifying glass.

Many thanks for any help.

An attempt to gain a clearer magnified view.

As I said on the other thread, it's something emanating from a ducal coronet (I think!).

To me, it looks like a stray leaf on the RHS?
Hence I was thinking a tree or a bush?

I think it is a mural crown (plenty of images come up through a Google search) and it might be a greyhound head.

From what I can find, mural crowns were awarded to distinguished soldiers.

They can also be used in for county councils or similar.

Added: I've found a crest showing a mural crown and a greyhound head here:

and another here:

Not checked the validity of the identification.

An old edition of Debrett's does show the coat of arms of Sir George Francis Hampson here:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01l9j/

It describes him as of Taplow, but I can't find a suitable 'big house' in that area that fits the photos to either support or disprove this possibility.  :-\

If it is who you think it is,Nell, I've found this on a Google search - links to Ancestry but not available at the moment:

Many thanks for the responses.

I have had one final effort at trying to improve the quality of the images.  I attempted to do high resolution scans but this method picks up no detail.  The only way in which I am able to get any detail is using a camera through a magnifying glass.

I have tried to pick up views from each of the images where the crest appears.
