Title: Mystery of Great Grandfather solved
Post by: Marytm on Sunday 07 January 18 18:55 GMT (UK)
I have just had information that my Great Grandad was a William Burton not Handley.
From Oakamoor not sure if that is the correct spelling. He was a farmer in Burton upon Trent or maybe Stoke on Trent. My Grandad was born in 1914.
William had a brother called Frederick and my Grandad was illegitimate.
Does anyone have any information about The Burton Family? I have found one in 1901 but Dad is down as case maker I think this is wrong as would be a farmer?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Marytm

Hello,

Do you mean that William Burton was a farmer when he fathered the child in 1914 or that William Burton’s father was the farmer?
If the latter, how do you know this information? What else do you know about WB?
The one you mention fits with brother and place.

Regards
Heywood

I believe he (William Burton) was a farmer. I believe the farm had been in the family some time but I haven’t found confirmation of this yet. And that he had a brother Frederick who inherited the farm when he died.
This has all been told me so I am trying to confirm it with facts.
I was told it was Oakamoor in Burton on Trent but I am having trouble finding this, maybe it is Stoke on Trent?

I think George previously quoted with children William and Frederick is possibly the brother of the William from 1901.
In 1891 George is living next door to his parents John and Mary and children including the William who becomes a farmer.

Yes that was me too. I have been told this new information from a member of the family.
He seems to think they were well off farmers who had been on the same farm for years .
He was called William Frederick Handley on the birth cert.
I have been told this was made up.

Someone in between?

Martha Watts/Handley  and her address. Dad as William Frederick Handley, tool maker. Son Eric Handley.
On Eric's wedding cert it says Arnold samuel is his Dad, who died in 1911.

It is slightly confusing but I think I understand now.

I would say that you would need to confirm why your informant says this - is it a family story etc or is there more reliable information.

William would have a nephew Frederick not a brother, I think.

Hi

So the detail is "her address" ?!?

I ask for detail that you have so we can (hopefully) prove / disprove which one of the 2x births are "yours".
Rather than just assume.

Why are you with-holding her address?

Please give us ALL the detail you have, no matter how small you feel it may be.

Thank you.
Ray

chempat this is all very exciting... will try and look at this later. Is the farm now in Nation Trust hands?

The farm estate now appears to be in National Trust hands.

How sure are you that the information you have been told is accurate?
If your informant knew who the father was, then why was not the correct father recorded by Eric on the marriage certificate?

Or is it just rumours and not actual fact?

I do believe it. Eric was known as Handley like his half brothers and sisters and put their Dad’s name on the wedding cert. as deceased.I think this was easier and kept the secret. He was always very quiet about his family.
I don’t know if his wife knew.
