Where was George between 1876-1887?
George was born in 1848, place unknown. In 1875 he married Elizabeth Bryant 1856-1917 in Colefield Gloucestershire. According to the marriage certificate he was a blacksmith, his father was called William Spencer and in the Navy.
In Monmouthshire 1876 a daughter was born Pheobe Ada. the next child Charles was not born until 1887 by that time the family are living in Birmingham with Elizabeth's father Thomas Bryant. On each of the census 1881/1891/1901 husband George is not living with them.
They have 4 children so all together there is:
Phoebe Ada b 1876 Monmouthshire
Charles b 1887 Birmingham
George 1889-1890
Kate b 1891
Harriet 1894-1896
George 1897-1967
Should mention Elizabeth was born in Luckington, Wiltshire,
Any help would be appreciated

On the 1911 census, which I have just found Elizabeth and 3 of her children are living with son Charles and his wife Maria, Elizabeth is now a widow.

You said they have four children then give names and dates for 6?
You say you are looking for George between 1876 and 1887. Is that because you have not found any children born to the couple in those years?
-
Yes, they had 6 children, mentioned a further 4 after Charles was born. Also cannot find any children born between 1876-1887. Searched the GRO Record site.

Searched the GRO Record site.

does that mean that you researched each and every spencer-bryant birth in the period?
I find that strange to say that you have, and then not given the place, year and quarter for george to george (1887 -1897)?
-
Exactly, very strange, another strange factor is on the 1881 census Elizabeth is working as a servant and classes herself as unmarried. If George had gone into some form of military he would have visits home. I am thinking of prison but can find no record so far.

I wonder if it is a coincidence that the gap between births corresponds with their move from Monmouthshire to Birmingham.
If you have birth certificates for the children do they all name George as the father? (Though if Elizabeth was married George would automatically be presumed to be the father unless Elizabeth said otherwise). I was considering seperation and children born to a different man/men.

Where was Phoebe ada in 1881? Presumably not with her "unmarried" servant mother?
-
Looked on the 1881 census for Thomas Bryant and there a Phoebe age 5 living with the family, looks like daug written on orginal with a line going though.

Son Charles born 1887 Birmingham, married Maria Beard in 1909. on the copy of the marriage certificate I have just found on ancestry gives father George as a blacksmith??

i find it more likely that George died/disappeared after Phoebe was born, and Elizabeth shacked up with another man for the other kids, rather than george re-appearing
-
Its possible because I came across 2 baptisms for the children Harriet and George b 1897 naming Thomas Spencer as the father. But they could not of been living in the open.

Wander if George had a brother called Thomas?
