Post by: ChalmersB on Friday 23 March 18 20:26 GMT (UK)
Hi

I have Moses Blanchard born 1779, born in Abbotsbury, Dorset.

I have found a prison record saying he was convicted of smuggling and have his wife as Elizabeth Cozens.

Looking to find their ancestors.

Thanks

Hi,

A warm welcome to RootsChat from me too.

The only prison record I can find for a Moses Blanchard has him sentenced to death in 1820 in Dorset for Highway Robbery along with a Charles Blanchard and John Blanchard Junr.

Are there two Moses Blanchard's here or was the death sentence commuted?

Possible burial here: http://www.opcdorset.org/Abbotsbury/AbbotsburyBurials1813-1880.htm

17th April 1866 - Moses Blanchard of Abbotsbury aged 87.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Are you referring to this one nanny jan?

Moses Blanchard son of Gregory & Honour Hansford baptised 10th Nov 1780.

If so should we be looking for Blanchard's or Hansford's?

Or was his full name Moses Blanchard Hansford?

Kind regards

David

Hi,

Hmmm, there were two Moses Blanchard's!

At Abbotsbury, Moses son of Isaac & Ann Blanchards baptised 2nd Nov 1798. Could he the one referred to in 1820 as sentenced to death?

Wonder if Isaac was a brother of the elder (born 1779/80) Moses?

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Hi,

Have found a couple of Seaman's records (Merchant Navy) for Moses on FindMyPast and they give the following details:

Born: Abbotsbury, Dorset on 6th May 1778
Ticket No: 186 044
Height: 5 ft 8 & a half inches
Complexion: Florid
Hair & Eyes: Both Grey
Capacity: Seaman

The ticket was issued on the 29th April 1846 at Weymouth & he was 68 years of age at this time. The record also shows that he could write.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Hi,

FindMyPast also has the transcribed marriage details for Moses & Elizabeth.

Moses Blanchard to Betty Cozens on 24th Dec 1804 at Abbotsbury. The bride made her mark. Winesses Robert Vincent & John Green.

1841 census has Elizabeth aged 55 but as Betty & 1851 as Betsy aged 67 & born Swyre, Dorset. However, I do not see a baptism there for her. Census details are from the transcriptions on the Dorset OPC website.

1841 here at Rodden Row, Abbotsbury: http://www.opcdorset.org/Abbotsbury/1841Abbotsbury.htm, Moses shown as a Fisherman (at Schedule No 60.1).

1851 here at 73, Rodden Row: http://www.opcdorset.org/Abbotsbury/1851Abbotsbury.htm, Moses shown as a Labourer.

1861 here at Abbotsbury: http://www.opcdorset.org/Abbotsbury/1861Abbotsbury.htm, Moses a widower Living with his married daughter Mary Trevett. Moses described as a Decayed Labourer! (They are at schedule no 93.)

Hope this all helps.

Kind regards

Emeltom

Newspapers reporting the executions of the above Moses & John Blanchard state that the three Blanchard's were brothers & born at Blandford in Dorset. Moses being 21 & John 22 at the time of execution. Therefore a different Moses Blanchard.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Hi,

I have Moses Blanchard born 1779, born in Abbotsbury, Dorset.

I have found a prison record saying he was convicted of smuggling and have his wife as Elizabeth Cozens.

The record in question is on Ancestry within the Dorchester Prison Admission & Discharge Registers, 1782-1901.

It gives the following info:

Dorchester Gaol

Prisoners in Custody on Criminal Process.

No: 184
Dates of Warrants: Dec 29th 1823
By Whom Committed: Rev W A Baker
When Brought to Prison: Dec 30th 1823
Prisoners Name: Moses Blanchard
Parish: Abbotsbury
Trade: Labourer
Family or Condition: Married
Age: 46
Size: 5ft 9 & one quarter inches
Hair: Dark Brown
Complexion: Brown
Eyes: Grey
Marks: Little finger right hand crooked & a cut on thumb left hand
Crimes: Smuggling
Sentence: To be imprisoned until he pays the penalty of £100
Behaviour: Orderly
When Discharged: Sept 20th 1824
Remarks: Discharged by order of the committing magistrate. Order to discharge annexxed? to the warrant of commitment.

There are other columns but there was nothing in them. This includes the columns regarding details of any trial. Perhaps suggests that there was enough evidence to convict him without the requirement or need of a trial.

At least we now know when this event took place. Seems to be absolutely no other records about it though as far as I can tell.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Wow! Thanks for all of this.

I now need to update and probably correct some of the details I have for Moses.

Many thanks

Hi Brook,

Your most welcome, glad I was able to help!

If Gregory Hansford & Honor are the correct parents then the following marriage may be of interest.

10th Feb 1766, Gregory Hansford to Honour Blanchard at Abbotsbury.

A couple of trees on Ancestry have this couple as the parents of Moses.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David
