Seeking an obituary for my ancestor Lieutenant Edward Hartley who died in September 1813 (buried 8/9/1813) at Gosport, Hampshire. Edward was born in Manchester Lancashire in 1777. He served in the Royal Navy at Trafalgar as Masters Mate on board the "Bellerephon" and was promoted to Lieutenant for that arena of battle. Thanks, Chrs Rob

Church burial has his year of birth as 1768:
Holy Trinity, Gosport
Lt Edward Hartley RN age 45 years
Abode:Hareway, Parish of Alverstoke

If this is the Edward Hartley who was a midshipman on the Atlas in 1798 and Defiance in 1799, he had a wife Grace who died circa 1798/9* per the Allotment Declarations. This marriage doesn't seem to feature in the online trees.
Marriage to Grace Osborne, Stoke Damerel, 3 April 1797
Child Edward Osborn Hartley born 27 January 1798, baptised at Stoke Damerel 27 May 1798. Per the Allotment Declarations, a Jno Paulby seems to have been appointed guardian.
*Grace Hartley buried at Stoke Damerel 3 October 1798 age 21

My Edward Hartley married Sarah Giles on 12th August 1801 at Alverstoke. He served on the "Bellerephon" but I am unaware of other service in the Royal Navy. Rob

This Edward was a Batchelor when he married Sarah Giles

Looking at the 1797 and 1801 marriage register signatures, I'd say it is definitely the same person.

Thanks Rosie yes I concur..my Edward is not the same one who served on the "Atlas" & the "Defiance". Chrs Rob

There is a burial at Stoke Damerel for an Edward Hartley aged 2, on January 2nd 1800.
-
I was just going to post the signature images too ::) I thought that despite him saying he was a Batchelor they looked the same
-
This source places him on the Defiance in 1801 https://threedecks.org/index.php?display_type=show_crewman&id=8121

Getting back to the original question, I can't see any mention of his death in newspapers at all.
I have looked at the burial register image and it does say aged 45 years, so the birth year would be 1767/8 if that is correct.

Just in case you don't have this http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10062243
"ff. 145-148. Sarah Hartley, widow of Edward Hartley, Lieutenant Royal Navy who died 05 Sep 1813. Includes: Extract from Parish Register, married 12 Aug 1801. Papers submitted to the Charity for the relief of Officers' Widows."

my Edward is not the same one who served on the "Atlas" & the "Defiance"
Did you look at the two signatures?
-
Thanks Shaun..but I am confused. Do you mean he married also in 1797? I agree the signatures do look the same! Cheers, Rob
-

Yes he married Grace in 1797. She died in 1798. Their son Edward appears to have died in 1800. John Paulby seems to have been the boy's guardian - he was a witness to the 1797 marriage.
If Edward was born circa 1768 there's a possible baptism at Manchester Cathedral https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JM8N-14G

Interesting information Shaun & thanks for the 1768 birth reference. You were saying that the Royal Navy man did marry Grace Osborne. Does this information come from military records? Given the fact of almost identical signatures I would say they are one and the same person. However with the age of 45yrs given at his death I am confused unless of course this is a mistake! The Edward Hartley buried in 1813 is as far as I know the husband of Sarah Giles. Cheers Rob

Does this information come from military records?
The information that he had a wife named Grace comes from the 1798 Allotment Declarations for the crew of HMS Atlas. Her death is noted in the same document as is the subsequent appointment of Jno Paulby as the recipient of his allotment (presumably as guardian for the child). In the 1799 Allotment Declarations for HMS Defiance he continued to pay Jno Paulby (who had been a witness to the 1797 marriage of Edward Hartley and Grace Osborne).

Thanks Shaun for the Allotment information. Incidentally is there record of a will for Edward Hartley? Cheers, Rob
