These free access weekends to non-UK records always give me more questions than answers ;D
Charles Eltham married Jesse Stewart on 24 June 1869 at Wentworth, Ontario. He was 28 (b abt 1841) and his parents were John and Ann according to the transcription. I have failed to find a suitable Charles on the GRO index. (He is not Charles Collins Eltham b 1846 Whitechapel - his parents were Matthew Eltham and Honorah Collins). However there is a Charles of right age on censuses s/o of John Eltham and Ann Maria Holloway in Brightwell (Oxon/ Berks) who disappears after 1861, so unless anyone can find a better candidate for Charles I think he's the one.
Charles Eltham Harrison married Alice May Peebles on 3rd June 1922 in Wentworth Ontario, Charles was a 41 year old widower. He says his parents are Edward E Harrison and Mary Grayson. Going back a generation, Edward Harrison and Mary Grayson married on 1st Sep 1880 at Wentworth county, he was a 35 year old widower born in England ( b abt 1835) and says his parents were John and Maria Harrison.
1851 census lists John Eltham, wife Ann Maria, children William 19, James 16, Charles 11, Jane 6
1861 census lists John Eltham, wife Maria, children Charles 21, Edward 19, Ann 16.
So where was Edward in 1851? Charles and Edward don't seem to have birth registrations, Ann was registered as Ann Maria in Q4 1844 Wallingford district and maybe the one recorded as Jane in 1851. John and Ann Maria Holloway married in 1827, so Charles and Edward would not registered as Holloways. John Eltham died Q1 1862.
Can anyone find any more about Edward Harrison in Canada and confirm or disprove he is brother of Charles Eltham?

Thank you very much for all the information and links to censuses. It looks like Charles (1840) sister Ann Maria Eltham also came to Canada, as I have found a marriage in same area giving parents as John and Maria.

Just found the tree. It looks like he has come to the same conclusion as me about Edward being born an Eltham and changing his name to Harrison. I think I need to trace Charles' other siblings. He has an older sister Paulina Charlotte (Plina on 1841 census, Selina in 1851). She married William Wilson King in 1849 and was living in Wallingford in 1851. Can't find her after that

Thank you again, I had wondered if William and Selina emigrated as I couldn't find any trace in UK after 1851. Maybe all the siblings came together after their father died. I haven't yet found the mother's death (Ann) Maria Eltham b abt 1809

When was your last sighting ???
Have you looked at this one - Ann Eltham 1811 - passed away Q1 1879 - age 68 - Malling - Kent - 2a 374 ???
Sandra

There are Elthams in Malling / Peckam distict of Kent at around that time - but not as far as I know connected to my Berks / Oxon family. i can't find this Ann on censuses but she may have married an Eltham after 1871. My theory is she was the wife of Thomas Eltham.
In 1871 Thomas Eltham age 62 (widower) is living in Hale street, East Peckham, his unmarried sister Elizabeth is his housekeeper. In Q4 1873 there is a marriage for a Thomas Eltham vol 2a page 812. However the index gives no other people with that page number in that quarter in Malling district. Looking at all the Anns who married in that quarter in Malling, there is an Ann Gower page ref 842. That page reference only has two other people (not three) one male (James Fermer) and one female (Esther Newman). In 1881 census there is a James Fermer and wife Esther living in East Peckam, So it looks like Ann Gower is the "spare" in tha quarter and Thomas Eltham's page reference has been mis-indexed.
In 1871 there is an Ann Gower age 61, the wife of John Gower age 68 living in East Peckham. There is a death for a John Gower age 68 registered in Malling district in Q3 1871. I can't find the death of an Ann Gower of the right age in Malling or neighbouring districts. So the evidence points to this Ann Eltham who died in Malling district being the widowed Ann Gower who married Thomas Eltham in 1873 and died as Ann Eltham in 1879.

Just found transcript of Thomas Eltham's marriage in 1873, It was to Ann Gower of Bullen (residence on 1871 census), so my theory looks right.
-
Ann Eltham of Hale street buried 27 Feb 1879 in Holy Trinity East Peckham.
So still looking for Ann Maria Eltham of Brightwell,

Long shot - Ann Harrison - born 1814 (birth year out) England - passed away 12 November 1889 Wentworth Hamilton Onatario - aged 75 years. Cause of Death Malarial Fever.

It's the same area as the others. Age at death is only as accurate as the informant knows. Could be...
So far we definitely have Charles, Selina (Paulina) and husband, Ann Maria jnr and Edward (assuming Edward Harrison is Edward Eltham) emigrating and no sign of their mother staying behind in England.
There are two other brothers William bapt 20 Nov 1831 and James bapt 22 Feb 1835. They seem to disappear as well

More food for thought ...............James E Harrison born 1839 England passed away Wentworth hamilton Ontario 23 May 1890 - aged 51 years - pneumonia.

Could be him, the middle E in the name might be Eltham.
I've been trying to find the family on ship's list going to Canada, but I have found an Edward Elthem (sic) age 22 (b abt 1841) on a ship to New York in 1863. It says his intended place of residence was Canada, it could have taken him a few years to get there. The only other Edward Eltham I can find of similar age was born in Medway district as Edward Charles Eltham in 1840 and appears on every census from 1841 to 1901 in Kent
-
If that is the right James, then only William is missing. Some online trees have him emigrating to Australia, but I haven't confirmed. Yesterday I was contacted by a descendant of Ann Maria Eltham. Her DNA results connect her to the descendants of the siblings who went to Canada. Possibly she will find an Australian connection as well. I don't have a DNA match to her, but if my theory of our connection is right, she would be my 7th cousin once removed, so probably too distant to have a match.

Hello, I don't know where you are in your search for Eltham-Harrison relatives, but as the grandson of Charles Eltham Harrison, born May 1881, Hamilton, Ontario, I can confirm that most of your information regarding the Elthams of Berkshire appears to be quite accurate. Edward Harrison (born Edward Eltham) is the only child of John and Ann who changed his surname after emigrating and no one was ever able to clarify why.
I was only 13 when my grandfather died in 1963 and I guess I wasn't curious enough to ask him if he knew why great grandfather Edward changed his name to Harrison. However, I know my father, Charles Grayson Harrison would have found out at some point in his life as he was always interested in family history and he couldn't tell me why any time I asked him before he died in 2015.
Seems strange that no one would know why.
I had certainly heard from my father about Grandad's half brother who had emigrated from Ontario to Texas.
My grandfather Charles used Eltham as a middle name as did his son, Hugh Eltham Harrison. I am not aware of any current usage of the name Eltham amongst the children of my nieces, nephews or indeed cousins and their offspring.
My father, Charles Gryson Harrison was the only child of Charles Eltham Harrison and Alice May Peebles, the younger sister of Bessie Peebles mother of the C E. Harrison's first four children - Mary-Louise, Hugh, Elizabeth, and Edward. Bessie died of complications following childbirth and Alice May moved in to care for the children. Some years later, Charles realized he had become smitten by Alice May and they were married. She later gave birth to my father who was significantly more than a half brother, as his mother's DNA would be pretty much identical to her older sister.
If there's anything I can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Hugh Clinton Harrison,
born Hamilton, Ontario, Jan 2, 1951
to Charles Grayson Harrison (1924-2015) and Nancy Alice née Wigle (1925, still alive and well and living at home at 97)

Hello Hugh
Welcome to Rootschat. Sorry didn't reply earlier but have not been getting notifications of new posts. I think that makes us 6th cousins. If my theory that John the father of Joseph Eltham b Brightwell abt 1776 was the son of John Eltham b Steventon abt 1749 is correct.
